Details of how to count in Spanish with cardinal and ordinal numbers and notes.

Key to abbreviations: m = masculine, f = feminine, sg = singular, pl = plural

Notes

• When counting one isuno, but with masculine nounsuno becomesun, and it becomesuna with feminine nouns. This also applies to other numbers containing one, e.g.veintiún coches (21 cars),veintiuna casas (21 houses).
• 100s also change to indicate gender, e.g.doscientos coches (200 cars),doscientas casas (200 houses).
• Fullstops (periods) are used to separte thousands and commas for decimal points, e.g. $1.234,50 = $1,234.50, except in Mexico, Central America and Puerto Rico.
• The numbers from 16 to 19 and 21 to 29 used to be spelleddiez y seis, diez y siete, diez y ocho, veinte y uno, veinte y dos, etc.
• The ordinal numbers above 10 are used mainly in formal writing. In speech the cardinal numbers are generally used. E.g. the 20th century is usuallyel siglo veinte / el siglo 20 rather thanel siglo vigésimo.
• Feminine ordinal numbers are like masculine ones, but ending in -a. E.g.primera,segunda,tercera.
• Masculine ordinal figures are written with º after and feminine with ª. E.g.Primero: 1º,Segundo: 2º,Primera: 1ª,Segunda: 2ª
