Details of how to count in French with cardinal and ordinal numbers.

Notes

• Different words for 70, 80 and 90 are used in different French-speaking regions. In Standard French these numbers aresoixante-dix,quatre-vingts andquatre-vingt-dix.
• In French-speaking parts of Switzerlandseptante,huitante andnonante are used, except in the Cantons of Geneva, Neuchâtel and Jura, wherequatre-vingts is generally used for 80, thoughhuitante is becoming more common. In the pastoctante was used in Switzerland for 80, though this is now considered archaic.
• In French-speaking parts of Belgium, and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi,septante andnonante are used for 70 and 90, while 80 isquatre-vingts.
• The abbrevation forpremier is 1^er andpremière is 1^re or 1^ère. Other ordinal abbrevations are written with e or^e, e.g. 2^e, 3^e, 4^e, or 2^ème, 3^ème, 4^ème. Roman numerals are also used II^e/ème, III^e/ème, IV^e/ème
