This has been a fun ride, participating in the2025 Last Gamebook Jam hosted byLast Tales. Even if it was mostly me sitting alone in my workshop figuring out how to approach a project like this and write the whole thing. This is my first writing that I make available for others than my family and friends. It’s also my first interactive fiction type of thing.
I initially had way grander ideas for project, but cut a lot of scoperegarding presentation and stick to the story, branches, puzzles and endings so I could submit something mildly interesting.
I had initially planned on handwriting the whole thing before digitizing. I abandoned that very unrealistic idea. Spent a day making a font out of my handwriting instead - I have a nice font now - but 100 pages of that is not something that anybody would finish reading.
I shelved another approach to presentation and interaction, which I intend to explore and design without the pressure of a deadline, which is more akin to a solo rpg journal type of thing.
The most valuable thing, tackling this, was all the learning in the process. And the ideas and tangents I had to stop myself from following and keep for a later time. I also figured making these types of stories is fun and engaging.
A dark confection of a storybook game where sweetness hides rot in a living world
