Out with the old, and in with the new — the 2026 numerals loom large over Times Square in the days before New Year’s Eve.

New technology is also being used to enhance the celebration, as each 7-foot-tall number is equipped with more than 100 LED light pucks, allowing for a wide range of color options for the first time.

What You Need To Know

  • Each of the 7-foot-tall Times Square 2026 numerals is equipped with more than 100 LED light pucks, allowing for a wide range of color options for the first time

  • At the test on Friday, the numbers were lit up in red, white and blue to celebrate the newly announced partnership between New Year’s Eve in Times Square and America250, the non-partisan organization tasked with planning the nation’s 250th anniversary

  • A second celebration at 12:04 a.m. will include an additional 2,000 pounds of red, white and blue confetti to kick off the start of the United States of America’s semiquincentennial year
  • In 2026, for the first time, there’s going to be a ball drop in Times Square that is not related to New Year’s Eve. On July 3, America250 will be ringing on July 4th in Times Square

At the test on Friday, the numbers were lit up in red, white and blue to celebrate the newly announced partnership between New Year’s Eve in Times Square and America250, the non-partisan organization tasked with planning the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Rosie Rios, the chair of America250, has been on the commission for eight years. She says their goal is to engage 350 million Americans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“The way I think about this is we’re one of the few countries that have almost every country represented in it. So while we are not the world, the world is us. I can’t think of a better way than to bring in 2026 here in New York,” she said. “I want as many Americans as possible to feel like this is a land of opportunity all over again.”

Rios told NY1 her three guiding words that motivated all the planning were “educate, engage and unite.”

Rios says there will be even more celebration in Times Square to mark the occasion, just after midnight.

“People can expect a second celebration at 12:04, where it’s going to be tons of confetti. It’s also going to be our custom ball that’s going to utilize technology that’s never been utilized before. Red, white, and blue, our logo,” Rios said.

The 12:04 a.m. celebration will feature an additional 2,000 pounds of confetti to kick off the start of the United States of America’s semi-quincentennial year.

In 2026, for the first time, there’s going to be a ball drop in Times Square that is not related to New Year’s Eve. On July 3, America250 will be ringing on July 4th in Times Square.

Rios says they are getting “three bites at the New York Apple.”

America250 is also launching America Gives, which Rios explains is intended to be the “largest year of volunteer hours ever aggregated by our country.”
