Wisp is a ghost in theAnimal Crossing series. He first appeared inDoubutsu no Mori+ and appears in all subsequent games exceptAnimal Crossing: Wild World andAnimal Crossing: New Leaf prior to theWelcome amiibo update. He appears at night, usually between 12 AM and 4 AM, and rewards theplayer with items or services after a specific task is completed.
Characteristics[edit]
Appearance[edit]
Wisp is a white ghost with beige lips, a pair of white teeth, black eyes, and gray eyebrows.
In thefirst-generation games,Pocket Camp, andNew Horizons, Wisp wears a hitaikakushi. InCity Folk andWelcome amiibo, Wisp wears a blue genie hat, which has a round-shaped golden brooch with a red gem and a feather with its colors being blue, cyan, green and white.
Personality[edit]
InDoubutsu no Mori+,Animal Crossing, andDoubutsu no Mori e+, Wisp is kind, polite, and friendly to the player, but also fears his boss. InCity Folk andWelcome amiibo, he acts like a helpful and generous genie. InNew Horizons, he has a more fearful side, despite being a ghost himself, as shown when the player approaches him to talk to him and then he mistakes them as a ghost and gets scared.
Appearances[edit]
InAnimal Crossing[edit]
InDoubutsu no Mori+,Animal Crossing, andDoubutsu no Mori e+, Wisp can appear in a randomacre between 12 AM and 4 AM. In order for Wisp to appear, thetown must have 8 or moreweeds. Once this requirement is met, Wisp will appear on a random night in 2 to 4 days. The weed requirement does not have to be maintained between meeting it and Wisp's appearance. When the player first enters the acre where Wisp is, he is not visible, but makes himself known by calling out to the player. With Wisp's name appearing as "??????", he says "Ooo... Can I ask you something...?" If the player gets near Wisp, he tells the player that he must collect fivespirits that have wandered into the town by 4 AM, or else he is in big trouble and his superior will punish him horribly. He asks the player to catch them with anet because he has seen how good the player is at catchinginsects and offers a reward in return. Wisp will return every night for 7 days until his spirits are caught and returned to him. Once his spirits are returned or 7 days pass without doing so, Wisp will appear again in 2 to 4 days as long as the town has 8 or more weeds.
Each Wisp spirit is placed in a different acre and does not move between acres. However, the game internally categorizes the spirits as insects, meaning, due to the fact that having a lowtown rating drops the chance that afish and insect spawn in an acre to as low as 50% chance each, it is possible in a town with low rating that a spirit will not spawn when its acre is entered. If this happens, the spirit is relocated to a new random acre and the chance of it spawning is calculated again when that acre is entered. The spirits initially only appear within acres in the B, C, D, or E rows; but can appear in any acre, including ones within the A and F rows, if they are relocated due to the player either leaving an acre without catching one or low town rating. Spirits cannot appear in an acre where another spirit resides or where the player is moving into.
After the player catches and returns the five spirits, Wisp will offer them one of three rewards as thanks:
- Pull weeds! - Wisp will remove all theweeds in the player's town.
- Paint my roof! - Wisp willrepaint the roof of the player'shouse to a color of their choosing.
- Give me stuff! - Wisp will give the player a random item that they have not obtained before, which can be any reorderablefurniture, wallpaper, carpet, clothing, umbrella, stationery, or any of the following non-reorderable items:Redd's unique furniture, raffle furniture,Wendell's wallpapers,Saharah's carpets,Gracie's clothing, orgyroids. If the player has already obtained all of these items, Wisp instead gives one of them at random.
InCity Folk[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: City Folk, on certain weekday nights, Wisp can appear in the town. He is initially invisible and calls out to the player; once found, he appears and asks them to find hisempty lamp that he lost. The empty lamp is in a random spot on the ground, and it can be found before or after meeting Wisp. Once returned to Wisp, he enters the lamp, turning it into themagic lamp. If the player brings the magic lamp to theirattic and rubs it, Wisp appears and asks the player to pick one of three wishes for him to grant:
- Weed! - Wisp will remove all the weeds in the player's town, excludingclovers anddandelions.
- Smash roaches! - Wisp will remove all thecockroaches in the player's house.
- Give me stuff! - Wisp will give the player the choice of a random furniture, headgear, accessory, or clothing item. Usually this is an item that is not currently in thecatalog (excluding rare items).
The player can keep the magic lamp until it is used, after which Wisp takes it back.
InWelcome amiibo[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo, amagic lamp will appear randomly while walking around town. If the player places the lamp in their house, Wisp will appear. UnlikeAnimal Crossing andAnimal Crossing: City Folk, Wisp helps withamiibo. Wisp can only be used once a day. While Wisp did not appear inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf at the game's launch, he was added as a major character in theWelcome amiibo update. When the player rubs the lamp, Wisp will appear and the player can use an amiibo card. When the amiibo is scanned, the player can choose for the villager to move to their town or to get something, usually furniture.
If a special character's amiibo is scanned, that character'sRV will appear at thecampground with special items that can be bought withMEOW Coupons. Wisp will take over running buildings if the usual proprietors are in their RVs; however, he will not be able to fulfill some roles, such asIsabelle's, preventing the player from using their services for the day. If theVillager amiibo is scanned, Wisp will appear at the campground in an RV.
If the player attempts to sell the magic lamp atRe-Tail,Reese will inform them that the lamp is valuable and will ask if they are sure they want to sell it. If the player sells it anyway, Reese will buy it for 10Bells and it will reappear outside the next day.
InNew Horizons[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Wisp returns to a form closer to his original appearance. On certain nights from 8 PM to 5 AM, the player can find Wisp wandering around the island. If talked to, Wisp will mistake the player as a ghost and get scared, which leads to his fiveWisp spirit pieces scattering across the island. As of version 1.5.0 of the game, performing the "Haunt" or “Scare”Reaction in Wisp's line of sight will trigger the same event. Similarly toAnimal Crossing, the player can find and catch the five spirits using the Net and return them to Wisp. After the spirits are returned, Wisp will offer the player the choice of receiving an item of something new or something expensive. If the spirits are not returned, they disappear from the inventory the next day.
Since version 2.0, Wisp can be invited over toPhotopia,The Roost, and thearchipelago inHappy Home Paradise for a vacation home. The latter is the only way to obtainWisp's photo.

| Description | NTSC-U: Cute Lil Wisp is first met when he shyly asks for your help in collecting five spirits before the sun rises. Who would have thought the simple bug net would be able to catch them? Cool! When you next meet him, in Animal Crossing: City Folk, he becomes a lamp spirit that's scared of ghosts. Don't judge him! Ghosts are scary! PAL: When cute Lil Wisp shows up in the first Animal Crossing, he shyly asks players to help him collect five spirits before dawn. Surprisingly, you can just use any old bug net for the job! In Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City, he appears as a lamp spirit with a fear of ghosts. Odd thing for a spirit to be scared of, don't you think? | |

- InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, if the player attempts to invite Wisp through theamiibo Call Center and has not returned all of hisspirit pieces, he will not appear atThe Roost. Instead, he will relay a message saying, "When you're done resting in the café, please look for my spirit pieces!"
- InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Wisp actually uses two character models; one used while in his small form upon separating from his spirit pieces, and the other model used when he's summoned through amiibo forThe Roost, a VIP Room at thehotel, or aParadise Planning vacation home. Notably, the latter exhibits a completely different social value and therefore different reactions to the player'sreactions than the former.
