TheWii U is a home video game console made byNintendo and released in 2012 as a successor to theWii. Its primary controller, the Wii U GamePad, contains a touchscreen that can either display supplemental information or a copy of the TV display.Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, a party spin-off game that utilizesamiibo, was the onlyAnimal Crossing game released at retail for the Wii U.

In addition toamiibo Festival,Animal Crossing Plaza—a free social application—was released digitally,Animal Crossing: Wild World for theNintendo DS was re-released as aVirtual Console title, andAnimal Crossing crossover content is featured inNintendo Land,Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, andMario Kart 8, with the latter being part of a downloadable content pack. The Wii U is also backward-compatible with Wii games and controllers.

The Wii U sold a total of 13.56 million units worldwide, making it one of Nintendo's least successful consoles.[2] It was succeeded by theNintendo Switch in 2017.
