WiiConnect24
WiiConnect24 was an online service for theWii that allowed the console to receive data over the internet fromNintendo and players on other Wii consoles while in standby mode. Launched alongside the Wii in November 2006, WiiConnect24 was used in various applications and games, includingAnimal Crossing: City Folk. When data was received, the console's disc slot would light up blue to notify the player.
The service was discontinued on June 27, 2013.[1]
Usage inCity Folk[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: City Folk, during the player's first trip to thecity,Rover appears on thebus and asks them if they would like to activate WiiConnect24. Afterward, the service can be toggled via the phone in the player'sattic. When enabled, the player could sendletters tofriends in other towns and receiveBlanca in their town after visiting a friend. Following the discontinuation of WiiConnect24, these features areno longer available through official means.
WiiConnect24 was also used by Nintendo todistribute items and designs to players for set periods of time from 2008 to 2012. During an item distribution,Pete would appear outside the player's house to hand-deliver a letter from Nintendo containing the item. During a design distribution,Wendell would appear instead to give the player the design.
