Wendell is awalrus in theAnimal Crossing series. He has slightly different roles in each game appearance, ranging from wallpaper salesman to traveling artist, but they all revolve around his artistic ability and design skills. His extreme hunger may be a reference to the phrase "starving artist."
Characteristics[edit]
Appearance[edit]

Wendell is a fat, periwinkle blue walrus with two large white tusks, large closed eyes with dark-blue lining his upper lids, dark-blue freckles with grayish-white linings (for visibility), and a white belly with a periwinkle blue x-shaped belly button. His flippers have dark-blue lines resembling webbing, with grayish-white lining to separate his digits from one another.
Clothing[edit]
InDoubutsu no Mori,Animal Crossing,Wild World,City Folk, and🎬Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori, Wendell wears a beige sleeveless shirt that does not cover his entire stomach, leaving his small x belly button visible. He carries a canvas, traveler's backpack, and umbrella with him. Starting inNew Leaf, he wears beige striped pajamas and a matching nightcap, and only carries a canvas. In his RV inWelcome amiibo, he wears a beige sleeveless shirt.
Personality[edit]
Wendell likes sleeping (explaining why he always closes his eyes, and wears pajamas and a nightcap starting inNew Leaf) and eating (explaining why he is always fat). Due to being a traveling artist, he also likes rewarding theplayer with different kinds/types ofwallpaper anddesigns/patterns upon getting fed by the player, traveling, and painting. He even likes copying other patterns from the town residents all while dreaming inNew Leaf.
Appearances[edit]
InAnimal Crossing[edit]
In everyfirst-generationAnimal Crossing game, Wendell can appear as avisitor every two to seven days. In the days leading up to his arrival,Copper tells the player that Wendell was spotted in the next town over, and he tells them what day he will be in town. When Wendell is in town, Copper tells the player which acre he is currently in.
Wendell walks around in a random acre and asks the player forfood if spoken to. If the player gives him anyfish, he remarks that it is his favorite and gives the player one of 18 (19 inDoubutsu no Mori e+) exclusivewallpaper items. Afterward, he continues to thank the player and does not ask for any more food. Wendell will eat anyfruit, candy, or amushroom, but he will say it did not taste very good and will continue to ask for food. If the player gives Wendell a non-food item, he does not eat it but still takes it from them. Despiteturnips being edible, Wendell treats them as a non-food item.
InWild World[edit]

Wendell's role inWild World is different than it is in the previous installments. This time, he gives out unique designs. Upon giving him something to eat when he visits the town, he gives a pattern that is unobtainable anywhere else. He will eat anything, but a pattern can only be acquired by feeding him fruit, turnips, acorns, and fish. Giving him any type offruit will yield a pattern already obtained, exceptcoconuts, which yield a different pattern. He does not appear on Sunday or Saturday anymore. Instead, he appears from 6 AM to midnight on a random weekday (excluding the dayRedd comes). InWild World, Wendell comes from Tuskany. When one of his designs is displayed at Able Sisters, it will sayWendell fromTuskany. Tuskany is a pun involving the region ofTuscany,Italy and tusks, which are a predominant feature on walruses. Wendell is the first step in theGolden Axe Trading Event.
InCity Folk[edit]
Wendell has the same role inCity Folk as he did inWild World, excluding the Golden Axe Trade Event and Redd (who now has a store in thecity). If the player puts Wendell's designs on display atAble Sisters and asks to receive one of them, Mabel says: "That design is made by Wendell fromSumware," which is a pun on "somewhere."
WithWiiConnect24 enabled, he may give out designs on behalf of Nintendo asdistributed designs, saying something along the lines of "I made this new design, and wondered what you would think..."
InNew Leaf[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, Wendell appears inDream Towns distributing custom designs created by the town residents. The owner of the town can disable his appearances.
InNew Horizons[edit]
Although initially absent, Wendell was added in the 2.0 update ofAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, as one of the many visitors toThe Roost should the player invite him by using his amiibo card. He still wears his pajamas from the Dream Towns inNew Leaf; he attributes this to rushing out of bed and forgetting to change his clothes. In addition,Wendell's poster can be obtained fromNook Shopping after inviting him toPhotopia via hisamiibo.
InGekijōban Doubutsu no Mori[edit]
Wendell briefly appears in🎬Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori.Ai finds him on the beach, exhausted from hunger. She takes him to her house to eat. After he is finished, he disappears without warning.
Other appearances[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Wendell appears as a trophy and a sticker, and can be seen in theSmashville stage.
| Description | A famous painter who wanders about with a large rucksack on his back. When he arrives in town, he's so hungry he can barely stand. While you think it's probably a good idea to give him something to eat, it's hard to figure out what that should be. That being said, he looks really hungry and would likely devour anything given to him. | |

InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]
Wendell appears as a trophy and is once again in the Smashville stage. Additionally, He now appears in theTown and City stage.
| Description | NTSC-U: Wendell is a wandering artist with a healthy appetite. He may be a walrus, but his tastes extend well beyond fish! In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, he only appears in dreams when the player uses the Dream Suite. He doesn't seem to be too hungry, but it is a dream—he's probably happily eating in the waking world! PAL: A travelling artist with a big appetite. Since he's a walrus, you might think he'd only eat fish, but he'll also gobble up fruit, nuts and...pretty much anything. You could say he's a fan of the "sea food diet". In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, he only appears in dreams, when you visit the Dream Suite. At least then he's not too hungry! | |
