Tortimer is an elderlytortoise who is themayor of thetown theplayer moves into in theAnimal Crossing series prior toAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, where that role is given to the player. He has appeared in every installment in theAnimal Crossing series, with the exception ofDoubutsu no Mori. His name is a portmanteau oftortoise and the given nameMortimer.
In games beforeAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, Tortimer appears outside celebrating during townevents and will give the player holiday-specific items. Beginning inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, Tortimer has retired from the role of mayor. InNew Leaf, he lives onTortimer Island where he works as a tour guide, and inNew Horizons, he appears onHarv's Island and provides access to the player'sstorage.
Characteristics[edit]
Appearance[edit]
Tortimer is a light olive, elderly tortoise who wears black, rounded glasses. His shell has a multicolored pattern shared with that ofKapp'n. His mouth and eyes have notable wrinkles. When not wearing a hat, a single, large strand of black hair can be seen on his head.
Clothing[edit]
InDoubutsu no Mori+ andDoubutsu no Mori e+, Tortimer wears a red zucchetto with blue lenses in his glasses. For his mayoral attire inAnimal Crossing,Wild World, andCity Folk, he wears a black top hat and a bowtie on the front of his shell, and his glasses have clear lenses. Starting inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, he wears a straw hat and a red aloha shirt, indicating his retirement.
Personality[edit]
Reflecting his old age, Tortimer often refers to the player as "sprout" or "whippersnapper", and he is occasionally forgetful. He often interjects with his signature laugh, "Heh heh HORF!".
In the games where he is mayor, Tortimer is shown to take pride in his job, and he enjoys respect. At the beginning of each game when meeting the player, he asks them a question about either which animal they like the best, which family member they look up to most, or which profession they respect the most. If the player chooses anything other than "turtle", "grandpa", or "mayor", he is disappointed in them.
Background[edit]
InWild World, Tortimer mentions having had a wife, whom he refers to as "Mrs. Tortimer." It is implied through his dialog that she died in an accident while modeling for "Tortoise Wax." According to villagers inCity Folk, Tortimer "has connections" and is the one responsible for all the special visitors who come duringevents.
Appearances[edit]
In the first-generation games[edit]
Tortimer appears inDoubutsu no Mori+,Animal Crossing, andDoubutsu no Mori e+. During the player'spart-time job forTom Nook, he appears at thewishing well to greet the player. He also appears there during mostevents to give the player an exclusive item. During theFishing Tourneys, Tortimer appears in a random acre rather than at the wishing well.
After the player catches every fish or bug, Tortimer appears outside their house the next time the game is loaded to give them thegolden rod orgolden net, respectively.
After the 15th villager moves into town, Tortimer appears in a random river acre and asks the player if they would like abridge built there. If the player says no, he will reappear each day in a different acre.
InWild World[edit]
Tortimer returns inAnimal Crossing: Wild World, serving the same role as the previous installment, except he is now stationed at the newly added town hall. As inAnimal Crossing, the player is required to speak with him at the start of the game and afterward gives out special items to commemorate holidays. If no event is occurring, Tortimer can be seen napping at his desk in the town hall behindPelly orPhyllis. Tortimer also appears as the host ofFishing Tourneys andBug-Offs. During theAcorn Festival,Cornimer, a character who is heavily implied to be Tortimer in disguise, is introduced as the mascot of the event.
InCity Folk[edit]
Tortimer's role inAnimal Crossing: City Folk is virtually identical to his role inAnimal Crossing: Wild World, with the exception of various new holidays being added. He no longer hosts the Fishing Tourney or Bug-Off, which are now hosted byChip andNat, respectively.
He will also appear when a new structure (bridge, fountain, windmill, orlighthouse) is built as a result of donations to thetown fund.
InNew Leaf[edit]
Tortimer's role is vastly changed inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, as he is no longer the mayor of the player's town. Instead, he has retired toTortimer Island, a private resort home to various activities, known as "tours", whileIsabelle fulfills his previous role of distributing festive items. On the island, Tortimer appears as the host of each tour, explaining the rules and regulations for each one, as well as keeping score of the player's progress. Cornimer's head also appears in thetoy-hammer tours, attached to the lawnmower that is hit in the tour.
In theWelcome amiibo update, Tortimer appears as the Stage 1 opponent inAnimal Crossing Puzzle League, while Cornimer is the opponent of Stage 7.
InNew Horizons[edit]
Tortimer was added toAnimal Crossing: New Horizons in the2.0 Free Update. He appears at the open market onHarv's Island, where he allows the player to access their home'sstorage. In addition,Tortimer's poster can be obtained fromNook Shopping after inviting him toPhotopia via hisamiibo card.
InPocket Camp[edit]
Tortimer's role is once again changed inAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp, in which Tortimer hosted agarden event, Tortimer's Floral Fancy, from December 27, 2018 to January 7, 2019.
InGekijōban Doubutsu no Mori[edit]
In🎬Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori, Tortimer is the mayor ofAnimal Village. He appears in town hall when Ai moves in, then outside town hall in the winter to announce the Winter Festival and later to announce the winner of the festival. Throughout the film, Tortimer is running for reelection. Despite running unopposed, he is worried about losing, and he urges all of the residents to vote. At the end of the film, it is shown that Tortimer won the election, with his own vote being the only one cast.
Other appearances[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Tortimer appears as both a trophy and a sticker, and in the background of theSmashville stage.
| Description | The mayor of the player's town. Usually in his office in the town hall, he emerges on holidays to usher in special festivities. He's a busy fellow who also serves as the record keeper for fishing and bug-catching tournaments. He cuts a very dashing figure in his hat and bow tie. There may be some link between him and Cornimer, who appears at the fall Acorn Festival. | |

InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]
Tortimer appears as a trophy and has a chance of appearing in the background of the Tortimer Island stage exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS version. In the Wii U version, Tortimer also appears as a spectator in the Smashville andTown and City stages, but doesn't have a trophy.
| Description | NTSC-U: A former mayor who is living out his retirement on a tropical island. He's not a hermit, though, and absolutely loves spending time with anyone who goes to visit his tropical paradise. Everyone could learn from his generous spirit. And that aloha shirt looks great! PAL: Many cultures around the world see the tortoise as a symbol of great age and wisdom, and Tortimer embodies both in spades. A former town mayor, he now lives a slightly quieter life organising island tours and giving out medals. The Hawaiian shirt definitely wasn't part of his mayoral attire. | |
