Pascal is a seaotter that first appears inAnimal Crossing: Wild World and later inAnimal Crossing: City Folk,Animal Crossing: New Leaf, andAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. His name is a reference to a French philosopher,Blaise Pascal; it may also be a reference to themeasurement Pascal, also named after the philosopher, which is used to measure pressure underwater. It could also be derived from "scallop".

InWild World andCity Folk, he appears in theplayer'stown on random weekdays from 6 AM to 12 AM. He gives awayfurniture from thePirate Ship Theme if his conditions are met. InNew Horizons, he gives out theMermaid Series ofDIY recipes, clothing, or apearl when ascallop is caught by the player.

Characteristics[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Pascal is a red sea otter, with a yellow muzzle, black nose, and wide black eyes. He wears a beige beanie hat and dungarees, and has an unknownshell around his neck, probably a scallop.

Personality[edit]

Pascal is laid-back, wise and thoughtful, talking like alazyvillager or asmug villager. His catchphrase, "maaan," makes him sound like ahippie. He likes relaxing, swimming, and collecting scallops. He is also known for his philosophical tendencies, making him well known amongst the villagers in the player's town. Most of his philosophy is marine-themed, explaining why he gives away furniture from the Pirate Ship Theme if his conditions are met, and/or also gives out Mermaid Series of DIY recipes, clothing, or a Pearl when a scallop is caught by the player. Every time the player talks to him, he jumps into ariver floating downstream until out of sight.

Appearances[edit]

InWild World[edit]

Pascal makes his debut inAnimal Crossing: Wild World, in which he appears during random weekdays by the river mouth from 6 AM to 12 AM, where the player can listen to one of his diffuse and sometimes random thoughts. If a player decides to, Pascal will give them a piece of ship-themed furniture before performing a perfect dive into thesea and swimming off.

Pascal is a key member in theWild Worldgolden axe trading event. In exchange for a scallop, which is obtained from Tortimer for amassage chair, Pascal will give players agolden axe or aphoto of himself. He is one of seven special characters inWild World who gives their picture out, the others beingTom Nook,K.K. Slider,Pelly,Phyllis, andKatie andKaitlin.

Sometimescranky villagers will state that when Pascal was little he got hit in the head with a soccer ball, and from then on, he started saying random philosophy. It is not known if this rumor is true.

InCity Folk[edit]

"I used to be into rap music, maaaan, but it's hard to freestyle underwater."
— Pascal,Animal Crossing: City Folk

Pascal's role is largely unchanged inAnimal Crossing: City Folk, as he still stands on one of the town's bridges on random weekdays from 6 AM to 12 AM. ThoughBooker will not tell players when he is in their town, the villagers will usually know. After sharing some philosophy, Pascal does a triple flip into the river, floating toward the sea, scaring anyfish along the way. In this game, if the player is carrying a scallop when talking to Pascal, he will exchange it for a piece of ship-themed furniture, rather than the golden axe or his picture.

InNew Leaf[edit]

InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, Pascal can be encountered when the player goes diving. If the player catches a scallop, Pascal will appear and ask to have it. If Pascal is given a scallop, he gives the player a piece of pirate furniture in return. He appears once per day.

InNew Horizons[edit]

Pascal dropping some deep truth to theplayer after giving him ascallop inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons.

While initially absent fromAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Pascal was added in Wave 1 of theFree Summer Update. Similar to inNew Leaf, he appears if the player finds a scallop while diving and asks if he can have it. If the player gives him the scallop, he will randomly reward them with aMermaidDIY recipe, a piece of mermaid-themed clothing (either amermaid fishy dress, mermaid princess dress, mermaid shoes, ormermaid tiara), or apearl. As of3.0, Pascal will always give the player a pearl in addition to a mermaid-themed item or another pearl. Afterward, he can be seen out of the border, swimming happily with his scallop. If the player follows him, he can also be seen cracking it open and eating it. He will not appear if the player is visiting another player's island or while the gates are open. Additionally, he will only make an appearance once per day.

Prior toNew Horizons, he used to give the player a random furniture from thePirate Series, but this role is taken over byGullivarrr.

Notably, Pascal's voice in this game is less deep than in previous games, sounding more akin to asmug villager.

Prior to its removal in version2.0, when the player scans Pascal'samiibo card and tries to invite him, he will say:

Heya,Player. What's up in your corner of the universe?
Hang at yourcampsite?
Aw, maaaan... I'm more of a "swim in the sea and stare at the sky" type. It's real cool of you to ask though.

InPocket Camp[edit]

Pascal can be seen floating on the waters ofSunburst Island when on the cargo loading screen forGulliver's travels. He also hostedPascal's Crunchy Munchies,Pascal's Pearl Plunge, andPascal's Deep-Sea Digs.

DescriptionNTSC-U: "People say there are always other fish in the sea, but, maaan, there are giant squids in there too." That's Pascal, ever the marine philosopher. He appears when a scallop is found, dispensing his philosophical thoughts and trading furniture for the scallop.

PAL: The philosophical wisdom of Pascal comes in all shapes and sizes. Some of his musings will leave you mildly puzzled: "You ever tried to play an oboe underwater, maaan? It ain't easy." Others will leave you flat-out baffled: "You can't fool physics, maaan. That guy knows EVERYTHING!" Give him a scallop and see what he says!
