Live performances are an event occurring in every game in the series, in whichK.K. Slider visitstown to sing hismusic live with acoustic guitar accompaniment. While performing a song for theplayer, a cutscene is shown in which the game's development credits are displayed.
After watching K.K.'s first performance of the night, theplayer will receive a "bootleg" version of the song that can be played on astereo. According to K.K., he provides copies to audience members as an act of defiance to capitalistic practices by the music industry.
Description[edit]
Theplayer can request a specific song to be performed, tell K.K. their mood (from which he will choose a matching song), or simply allow K.K. to pick a song to perform at random. In the latter instance, he will typically perform a song that the player has not yet obtained a bootleg for. Every game featuressecret songs that will only be performed upon request. If the player requests a song, they are prompted to type the name of the song using the in-game keyboard. This is case-sensitive and symbol-sensitive; the player must input the exact name of the requested song, otherwise K.K. will not recognise the request.
During a performance, a cutscene begins in which the background will fade to black, leaving only K.K. and the player to be shown. The camera slowly spins around the characters as the game's credits are shown throughout the duration of the song. Periodically, various weather-related effects are displayed, such as snow, falling leaves, and rain. When K.K. sings, he speaks inAnimalese, using the phonemes "nah," "me," "oh," "now," and "queh." In some songs, he will howl, whistle, click, and hum, altogether to make sound.
If the player makes an invalid song request, K.K. will play a random, unobtainable song, and afterwards tell the player that the requested song was "not his bag." Although untitled and unobtainable in the game they are introduced in, these invalid songs have typically become named, obtainable secret songs in subsequent games.
Appearances[edit]
In the first-generation games[edit]
In thefirst generation games,K.K. Slider can be found sitting on a wooden crate in front of thetrain station every Saturday from 8 PM to 12 AM. The player can only watch K.K. perform a single song for the night.
InDoubutsu no Mori e+, twelve new songs have been added to K.K.'s repertoire, and are available only via e-Reader cards. In this game only, the player can also obtain live performance recordings that can be played in a stereo, separate from the bootlegs. These are typically obtained as gifts from villagers with high friendship, or from certain special characters.
Wild World[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: Wild World, K.K. Slider continues to perform live music every Saturday from 8 PM to 12 AM, however he now performs on the stage atThe Roost. As in the previous game, the player can watch a single performance, either requesting a specific song, suggesting a mood, or letting K.K. pick a song of his choosing. Duringmultiplayer sessions, K.K. will not appear in The Roost, but will appear once the multiplayer session is ended.
During thegolden axe trading sequence, the player can trade acountry guitar with K.K. during one of his shows to receiveK.K.'s pic.
City Folk[edit]
Just as in the previous game, K.K. Slider performs inAnimal Crossing: City Folk atThe Roost every Saturday from 8 PM to 12 AM. He has three new songs in his repertoire, and can now perform encores after the initial performance. However, K.K. will not give the player bootleg copies of any songs performed as an encore. For the first time, K.K.'s performance can be watched by multiple players at once during multiplayer sessions, with a nearby table seating up to 4 players. All players present must be seated at the table for the performance to begin.
New Leaf[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, K.K. Slider continues to appear every Saturday from 8 PM to 12 AM. However, he now performs atClub LOL onMain Street. Somevillagers may attend the performance, and will be seated in front of the stage when the player enters the club. Performances can be watched by multiple players at once during multiplayer sessions, but players must be seated to begin the performance.
If the player has requested songs at 20 separate shows, K.K. will give themK.K.'s Pic. The player is now able to purchase the bootlegs of K.K.'s songs fromT.I.Y. orT&T Emporium, as well as from thecatalog. This means songs can be acquired without the need to receive them from K.K. at his live shows. On the Saturday before a player'sbirthday (or the day itself, should it fall on a Saturday), K.K. will always perform "K.K. Birthday" for the player. This is the only song that cannot be purchased or performed by request.
K.K. Slider's alter-ego,DJ KK, is introduced to the series. Every other day of the week, DJ KK will perform remixes of his live performances at Club LOL from 8 PM to 6 AM. Each night alternates between House Night (house music remixes), and NES Night (chiptune remixes). On the player's birthday, DJ KK will play a special remix of "K.K. Birthday," and onNew Year's Eve he will play a remix of theNew Leaf title theme. During DJ KK's shows, the player can dance to the music by pressing different directions on.
New Horizons[edit]
In a change from previous games, K.K. Slider will initially not appear in town to perform music. The only way to acquire bootlegs of his songs is fromNook Shopping, which features a different song available for purchase each day, or to receive them from other players. During the game's storyline,Tom Nook will inform the player about "Project K.", a plan to make the island so desirable that it can attract a celebrity such as K.K. to visit. The player must work to improve theisland rating to 3 stars, checking in withIsabelle to monitor their progress. Once a rating of 3 stars is achieved, and the player checks in with Isabelle, K.K. Slider will express interest in visiting the island. On the next day that has no other events occurring, K.K. Slider will visit the island. As soon as Isabelle completes her daily announcements upon loading the game, a cutscene will begin in which K.K. performs "Welcome Horizons" to all of the island's inhabitants.
Following this initial visit, K.K. will visit the island every Saturday, appearing in the plaza outside ofResident Services all day. If another event is due to take place in the plaza on a Saturday, K.K. will instead visit on the following Sunday (prior to version 1.3.0 he would attend on the preceding Friday). If an event is also due to occur on the Sunday, then he will visit on the following Monday instead. K.K. will also appear to perform "K.K. Birthday" on the player's birthday (regardless of the day it falls on), unless another event is taking place, in which case K.K. will perform on the next available day instead.
K.K. can be seen practicing throughout the day, but will perform only from 6 PM to 12 AM.Villagers may occasionally sit in chairs to watch K.K. practice or perform. Any villagers present when a performance begins will participate in the cutscene. Villagers will not sit in chairs during multiplayer sessions, however, to allow room for other players to participate. Any player may request a song from K.K., but that player must be seated for the performance to begin. Other players who are seated will participate in the cutscene, but those who are standing can only observe the performance occurring in the background. If a visiting player requests a song, they will receive a bootleg copy in aletter, rather than from K.K. directly.
The2.0 update introduces 12 new songs for K.K. to perform. The update also adds the ability to clap along to a song by pressing, and any participating villagers will clap in unison with the player. The player can also wave alight stick or acolorful light stick during the cutscene if they hold one when the performance begins, and partipating villagers will also wave their sticks or have their stick's colors changed in sync.
Pocket Camp Complete[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete, K.K. Slider will perform live on the stage atWhistle Pass every night from 7 PM to 12 AM. He will only play a single song on a loop. Friends, and their camp caretakers, will gather around the stage during the show. The player can freely watch the performance, but unlike in other games, there is no cutscene, nor can the player acquire bootlegs of songs.
