Tom Nook explaining island backup

Island backup is a feature inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons that allows the player to back up theirisland to their Nintendo Account to be restored in the event that theNintendo Switch system the island is stored on is lost or damaged. This feature was added in the1.4.0 Summer Update (Wave 2) and requires an activeNintendo Switch Online membership. SinceNew Horizons does not support standard Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves, this is the only way to back up or restoreNew Horizons save data.

Island backup can be enabled in the Settings menu, which is accessed pressingWii U - Button.svg on the game's title screen. Afterward, the island save data is periodically backed up to the cloud, with the latest backup date and time displayed on the title screen. Restoring an island backup requires contacting Nintendo Customer Support; once done, holdingWii U - Button.svg as the game boots causesTom Nook to appear and give the player the option to restore any islands that are backed up to their Nintendo Account.
