Isabelle^{[nb 3]} is adog in theAnimal Crossing series who first appeared inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, where she helps theplayer with their duties asmayor. She would later appear inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, playing a similar, but smaller role as the head of the Civic Consultation Counter at theResident Services building.

Her name was first revealed as Hisho (ひしょ), which is Japanese for secretary, during theNew Leaf developer commentary,^[1] then was changed in the June 2012 Nintendo Direct to Shizue, a reference to her breed, theShih Tzu.^[2] When localized to English, her name became Isabelle. It may be based on the fact that the top of her head resembles aBell sack. She has a younger twin brother namedDigby who runs theHH Showcase.

Since her introduction inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, Isabelle has become a mascot for theAnimal Crossing series along withTom Nook, appearing in all subsequent games and becoming the fictional head of the officialAnimal Crossing Twitter account (though she would be temporarily replaced by Lottie and Tom Nook to promoteHappy Home Designer andNew Horizons respectively). Additionally, she is featured in many pieces of non-Animal Crossing media, including cameos in various games and playable roles inMario Kart 8 andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Isabelle is a yellow Shih Tzu dog with orange floppy ears and a ponytail. Her hair is tied up with a ribbon that has a bell on top. As such, whenever she walks, a little jingling sound is made.

Clothing[edit]

InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, duringspring andsummer, Isabelle wears atown-hall spring top, featuring a green plaid vest and a blue skirt. During thefall andwinter months, Isabelle wears atown-hall winter top, featuring a yellow and brown sweater and a green skirt. In both her outfits, she dons a red ribbon as an accessory. Isabelle can wear these type of clothing inAnimal Crossing: amiibo Festival during theBoard Game as her default and Lv. 2 outfit, though it would differ when using her Summer Outfit or Winter Outfitamiibo figures.

InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Isabelle wears acoral Nook Inc. aloha shirt and a white skirt in spring and summer, while in fall and winter, she wears a white dress underneath a brown sweater with a white flower insignia and a black skirt. During special occasions and events, Isabelle wears an outfit to match the occasion.

Personality[edit]

InNew Leaf, Isabelle tries her hardest to look up to the mayor as their secretary. Whenever the mayor completes apublic works project, she will ask the mayor if they want to attend a celebration for the project's completion, and will frown if the mayor bows out of the celebration. She also values the health and safety of the player, especially in instances where the player hasn't played their town in months. During holidays and events, Isabelle will tell the mayor to take a break from their duties in order to enjoy the festivities. She will also closetown hall if she ends up going to theplaza to celebrate.

InNew Horizons, Isabelle retains her hardworking nature fromNew Leaf, but she has also been shown to be extroverted, especially in the instance of her morning announcements. Routinely, she occasionally talks about television, or various aspects regarding her life, such as Digby and her missing sock, only to blush after realizing that what she said does not qualify as news. As of 2.0, this doesn't happen as often, as she usually has different announcements to give.

InNew Leaf[edit]

Isabelle's main role inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf is to act as the player's secretary and to help them with their mayoral duties. At the start of the game, she helps the player settle in by offering them advice, as well as providing them with optional tasks akin to those given byTom Nook in previous games. If the player repeatedly asks for advice, she will eventually ask them to bring her ashell from the beach. If the player returns to Isabelle with a shell, she will give the player three of a non-nativefruit in return. Isabelle will later ask the player if they would like to try bug-catching or fishing. After the player chooses one of these two options, Isabelle will challenge them to catch threefish orbugs. If the player does not have afishing rod ornet, Isabelle will allow them to buy one for 500Bells. When the player completes the task and shows Isabelle their encyclopedia, she will reward them with awatering can as a welcoming gift.

She also helps the player earn their development permit, which allows for the enactment ofordinances and the construction of public works projects, by helping them attain a 100% approval rating and, when the player's house is built, making them a resident of the town. When the player gains the abilities to build public works projects and enact ordinances, she assists the human character with those as well, including the ceremonies when projects are complete.

She spends most of the time in the town hall, but is also the main character to stand in the plaza during events. During such events, the town hall is closed, preventing the player from performing their mayoral duties.

Isabelle takes overMr. Resetti's role of reminding the player about saving until theReset Center is built. She may be caught sleeping in the town hall if the player has been mayor for at least seven days and has connected to the internet at least once, and this will allow theDream Suite to be built onMain Street.

InNew Horizons[edit]

InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Isabelle acts as Tom Nook's assistant for Nook Inc. Her appearance inNew Horizons requires the player to move threevillagers into houses and wait the full three days for each of them to move in. The day after all three villagers have moved in and unpacked, Tom Nook announces that the Resident Services tent will be upgraded into a full-fledged building and advises everyone to use any functions they need to before construction makes the tent inaccessible. The building closes the following day for construction, and Isabelle will appear inside the building once it is finished. In her appearance forNew Horizons, Isabelle now wears shoes and she will wear certain hats and outfits throughout events or seasons.

Isabelle is introduced once the Resident Services building is made. From then on, Isabelle gives the daily announcements instead of Tom Nook.

In the Resident Services building, Isabelle can be seen working around her desk, constantly engaged in an activity, such as looking out of the window or watering the office flowers. If the player sits at the Civic Consultation Center stool, she will help in changing the island tune and flag, resetting other villagers' clothes or speech, and will tell the player about the currentisland evaluation. Since version2.0, Isabelle can now enact island ordinances, acting very similar toNew Leaf's island ordinances. If theHappy Home Paradise DLC is downloaded, the player can also reset a villager's house interior.

Prior to its removal in version2.0, when the player scans Isabelle'samiibo card and tries to invite her, she will say:

Hello, this isIsabelle.Player?!
You're so funny! You're practically right in front of me right now, you know!
So, um... What's on your mind?
A visit to thecampsite? That sounds like loads of fun...
But...I've got a to-do list a mile long. Do I even have a sleeping bag? No, I'm so sorry, but I really can't go.

InHappy Home Designer[edit]

InAnimal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Isabelle is an employee at the town hall and gives the player publicfacility projects, because she has heard of the player's renowned house-building skills. She will follow the player to the facility to provide a list of required items. She can also have a home built for her by scanning her amiibo card via theamiibo phone.

InPocket Camp[edit]

InAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Isabelle acts as an assistant manager for the player at their campsite, providing tips to bring the most out of their camp, as well as providing various goals for the player to accomplish, from withinMarket Place. Additionally, by crafting the special item Isabelle's Slideshow, the player can invite Isabelle personally to their campsite.

InMario Kart 8[edit]

Isabelle is a playable character who - alongside theVillager - is part of the downloadable content packAnimal Crossing × Mario Kart 8, which was released on April 23, 2015. Her signature vehicle is theCity Tripper, and she is a lightweight racer. As with all DLC content, she is available in the base game of theNintendo Switch port.

In theSuper Smash Bros series[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Isabelle has a plethora of roles, each of varying degrees of importance. The secretary makes an appearance as an Assist Trophy, replacingMr. Resetti as the soleAnimal Crossing series Assist Trophy. Once summoned, she tosses fruit at the player who summoned her, which heal them upon contact. However, only the summoner has the advantage of being able to recover by simply touching the fruit; the other players can heal via the fruits, but they first must pick them up and use them as if they were an item. Isabelle will react to any opponents that try to fight her, and will react disappointingly if the summoner gets KO'd.

In addition, Isabelle is a Smash Tour item that, when used, causes all the nearby stat boost items to grow to their maximum size. She also makes a cameo in the first trailer forSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.^[3]

A Mii Fighter costume based on Isabelle - consisting of a hat and an outfit - was released as downloadable content on June 14th, 2015. The headgear can be adorned by all three variants of Mii Fighter, while the outfit is only available for the Mii Gunner (with the standard gun being replaced with a party popper).

Isabelle is a playable character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. She was revealed during the September 13, 2018 Nintendo Direct, tying with the initial teaser reveal for the then-untitledNew Horizons. She is marked as a semi-clone ofVillager, but is not marked as an Echo Fighter, a term used inUltimate to markclones likeLucina. Isabelle is classified asFighter #68.

In addition to her role as a playable fighter, herMii Costume fromSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U returns.

Unlock requirements[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Isabelle is anunlockable fighter; as such she will need to be unlocked by completing either of the following requirements:

After a VS. match, aMob Smash, aSpirit Board, or after exiting World of Light, a new challenger will appear in a specific order, with a wait time of 10 minutes. Isabelle is the 21st fighter to be unlocked afterLittle Mac.
To unlock Isabelle in Classic Mode, the player must complete Classic Mode and make Isabelle the next opponent. Clearing underPikachu's branch allows Isabelle to be unlocked earlier, being fought afterMega Man.
To unlock Isabelle in World of Light, the player must have the spirit ofKapp'n (Wild World) to be able to ride in theBus to her unlock stage. Isabelle will be fought on Ω version ofTown and City as a Grab-type fighter with 3,900 power. Once Isabelle is freed, a simple path is made to the town.

With the exception of the last option, the player would then need to fight Isabelle onTown and City.

Moveset[edit]

Isabelle has various mechanics shared with Villager, including the neutral specialPocket, her grab using anet, her forward tilt swinging anUmbrella, her aerials firingSlingshot, her down and up aerials swingingTurnips, and a sapling pot that she drop for her dash attack.

However, there are some unique movesets for her as well. For instance, her neutral attack has her using aToy Hammer to attack her opponents. Her forward smash fires aParty Popper and her up smash will result in her pulling up aDo-not-enter Sign.

Special moves[edit]

Pocket		Isabelle's neutral special. It acts very similar mechanically to Villager's neutral special, where any projectiles thrown is grabbed and stored by Isabelle. She can then use the move again to use the projectile to harm the fighter, or immediately throw it back. Consumables like the Superspicy Curry and Food are used when the move is pressed.
Fishing Rod		Isabelle's side special. She summons afishing rod that will catch any fighter which she will immediately throw forward. Previously, the move allowed duplication ofAssist Trophies. This was patched in version 2.0.0.
Balloon Trip		Isabelle's up special. She sits on a wooden platform and glides upwards with twobunny balloons color-coded to the player's color. Her version of Balloon Trip is much shorter than that of Villager's.
Lloid Trap		Isabelle's down special. She digs a rocket resemblingLloid in the ground, and any fighters that step on the trap will cause the fighter to be launched upwards. The move is akin to a projectile, meaning another Isabelle can pocket one's Lloid Trap and use the move against them.

Isabelle'sFinal Smash isDream Town Hall, acting in a similar mechanic to Villager'sDream House but dealing more damage. Isabelle first traps an opponent beforeTom Nook and theNooklings, where she pays thembells to build her aTown Hall. Once this task is accomplished, the jingle after completing ahome loan inNew Leaf plays, before the Town Hall explodes that causes knockback and damage to opponents.

Classic Mode[edit]

Isabelle'sClassic Mode route is named "Best in Show", and features female fighters present inUltimate, with Popo of theIce Climbers as the only male fighter. This is made more clear by the Japanese title 紅23点, using the idiom紅一点 which typically refers to a woman notable among a group of men. The battles in Isabelle's classic route feature the 23 distinct female characters inUltimate's base roster: fighters who are inherently female (Samus, Peach, Daisy, Sheik, Zelda, Lucina, Zero Suit Samus, Palutena, and Bayonetta); fighters with distinct female variants (Pikachu Libre, Pokémon Trainer, Wii Fit Trainer, the four female Villagers, Robin, Wendy, Corrin and Inkling); and fighters consisting of multiple characters including a female (Nana of the Ice Climbers, and Rosalina with her Lumas).

Completing Classic Mode as Isabelle will have "Plaza / Title Theme -Animal Crossing: City Folk /Animal Crossing: Wild World" play during the credit sequence.

OnPalutena's Temple,Pit can initiate a special taunting activation known as aSmash Taunt, where doing so activatesPalutena's Guidance, featuringViridi andPalutena commenting on a fighter that Pit is facing. When Isabelle is chosen for Palutena's Guidance, the following dialogue is presented:

Pit: That poor dog looks lost! I'll check its collar.
Palutena: That's Isabelle! She has bells on her head. That's why she Isabelle! Her day job is assistant to themayor of sometown. I hear she's the town's hardest worker. She's also cute, courageous, and modest, which is why everyone loves her!
Viridi: Hmph. She's overrated if you ask me.
Pit: No. One. Did. If Isabelle has so much going for her, why is she fighting in Smash?
Palutena: Yeah, it seems like a weird choice. Maybe she just wants to get some exercise.
Pit: There's gotta be less violent ways to get your blood pumping.
Palutena: She's from the same town as Villager, so their moves are somewhat alike. She's just full of surprises, though. Be extra careful of herFishing Rod. She'll reel you in like afish.
