Furniturecustomization is a mechanic inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf andAnimal Crossing: New Horizons that allows players to change the appearance of certain furniture items. InNew Leaf, customization can be done viaCyrus inRe-Tail, and inNew Horizons, it is done by eitherCyrus atHarv's Island or by the player at aDIY workbench.

There are two possible components of a piece of furniture that may be customizable: body or pattern. A body customization lets the player change the furniture's appearances from a list of options. A pattern customization lets the player select a pattern to apply to part of the furniture, either from a provided list or from a customdesign the player provides.

Appearances[edit]

InNew Leaf[edit]

The player confirming toCyrus on the wood variant for a Blue Wardrobe inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf

InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, furniture customization is done by speaking toCyrus atRe-Tail. Cyrus's services are unlocked after the player has lived in town for at least seven days, sold at least 100,000 Bells-worth of items at Re-Tail, cataloged at least 100 furniture items, and cataloged at least 50 clothing items.

If the player speaks to Cyrus while a customizable furniture item is in their pockets, they can have it customized for 10% of its buy price. Once the player selects the body and/or pattern variation, Cyrus takes the item and after 30 minutes, the customization is completed. Additionally, if the player has anore in their pockets while customizing a compatible item, they can choose to have the item's body variation customized based on the selected ore.

InNew Horizons[edit]

The player customizing an item inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons

InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, the player can customize certain channels of furniture items at aDIY workbench. Typically, the parts that can be customized are ones with patterns, such as fabrics, posters, and decals, though DIY-crafted items with variants can be repainted in different colors. Each item requires a specific amount ofcustomization kits to modify, though items from theSpooky Series requirepumpkins, and items from theFestivale Series instead use feathers. When using a workbench, the customization animation can be sped up by rapidly tappingSwitch A Button.svg.Tom Nook will teach the player how to customize items during theprologue.

Many items have variations of their base design that the player cannot modify themselves. Instead, these can only be customized byCyrus once he opens his stall onHarv's Island. Each item he customizes costs a varying amount of Bells. When the player chooses items in theirpockets to give to Cyrus, theRe-Tail "R" logo will appear over the items with channels that only he is able to customize.

Cyrus can also create unique aged or distressed variations of certain items that will never appear for sale in shops (though these variants can be ordered from theParadise Planning catalog, if the item has been unlocked for use in designing vacation homes):
