Fish are collectiblecreatures in theAnimal Crossing series that can be caught with afishing rod. They can be donated to themuseum, sold, placed in the player's home as a piece offurniture, or, only inNew Horizons, given toC.J. to create models. Fish can be found in various bodies of water, includingrivers,ponds, and thesea. All fish have a shadow size that can be used to roughly identify them, while some fish such as thegreat white shark are finned.

Unlikebugs, many fish are available year-round; however, the largest amount of fish are available during thesummer months. The most valuable fish in theAnimal Crossing series are thebarreleye,coelacanth,dorado,golden trout,great white shark, andstringfish, which all sell for 15,000Bells each inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. In allAnimal Crossing games, if the player catches every fish, they will receive a golden fishing rod, which gives the player more time to reel in fish after they bite.

InDoubutsu no Mori[edit]

A total of 32 types of fish appear inDoubutsu no Mori; however, because there is nomuseum in the game, they can only be sold, placed as furniture, or given toWendell in exchange forwallpaper.

A fish-catching event known as theFishing Tourney is introduced inDoubutsu no Mori, occurring each Sunday in June and November. During the event, the player is tasked with catchingsmall bass,bass, andlarge bass, and bringing them toChip, the host of the event. In return, Chip gives the player a furniture item.

InDoubutsu no Mori+ andAnimal Crossing[edit]

Eight more fish were introduced inDoubutsu no Mori+ and laterAnimal Crossing, making for a total of 40. Fish new to the series include thearapaima,barred knifejaw,crawfish,frog,jellyfish,killifish,red snapper,sea bass. Additionally, inAnimal Crossing, theherabuna is replaced with thebrook trout. Fish can now be donated to the museum, and if the player catches all 40 fish, they will be gifted agolden rod byTortimer and a fish ornament will appear on their house's roof.

Doubutsu no Mori e+ introduces another eight fish to the series, including thehorse mackerel,balloonfish,blue marlin,dab,octopus,olive flounder,seahorse, andsquid.

InWild World[edit]

13 more fish make their first appearance inAnimal Crossing: Wild World, while five do not return fromDoubutsu no Mori e+, making for a total of 56. Fish new to the series include theblack bass,clownfish,dorado,football fish,hammerhead shark,gar,king salmon,ocean sunfish,sea butterfly,shark,tuna,yellow perch, andzebra turkeyfish. Fish that did not return from the previous game include thebass,brook trout,large bass,giant catfish, andsmall bass. If the player catches all 56 fish, they will be mailed a letter containing thegolden rod.

The Fishing Tourney returns and is now hosted by Tortimer. Like in the previous game, fish can be given to Wendell, though in exchange for pre-madedesigns instead of wallpaper.

InCity Folk[edit]

All 56 fish fromWild World return inAnimal Crossing: City Folk, along with eight new ones, making for a total of 64 fish. The fish introduced inCity Folk are thebutterfly fish,lobster,moray eel,Napoleonfish,neon tetra,pike,ray, andsurgeonfish. Like in the previous games, if the player catches all 64 fish, they will be gifted agolden rod by Tortmer.

The Fishing Tourney returns fromCity Folk and is now hosted by Chip again. Like in the previous game, fish can be given to Wendell in exchange for pre-madedesigns.

InNew Leaf[edit]

11 more fish make their debut inAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, with three no longer reprising their role fromCity Folk. Fish new to the series include theblowfish,giant trevally,mitten crab,nibble fish,oarfish,ribbon eel,saddled bichir,saw shark,soft-shelled turtle,tadpole, andwhale shark. Thejellyfish is now an obstacle whileswimming, while thelobster andoctopus are nowsea creatures.

The Fishing Tourney once again returns and is identical toCity Folk aside from new prizes, items from theFish Set. If the player speaks to Chip during a Fishing Tourney after catching all 72 fish, he will reward them with thegolden rod.

InNew Horizons[edit]

Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduces 11 new fish to the series, with three not returning fromNew Leaf, for a total of 80 fish. Fish new to the series include theanchovy,barreleye,betta,golden trout,mahi-mahi,rainbowfish,ranchu goldfish,snapping turtle,sturgeon,suckerfish, andtilapia. The fish that have not returned fromNew Leaf are thebarbel steed,eel, andrainbow trout. If the player catches all 80 fish, they will be sent a letter from theFarway Museum containing thegolden rodDIY recipe.

A special character introduced inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons isC.J., a visitor who can haveFlick createmodels of fish in exchange for three of a specific fish. He can also purchase fish from the player for 1.5× their regular selling price.

C.J. is now the host of theFishing Tourneys, which have been overhauled sinceNew Leaf. Players are now tasked with catching as many fish as possible within three minutes, which can be repeated until the end of the event. C.J. will reward the player with points based on how many fish are caught per round, which can be exchanged for fish-themed furniture, clothing, or tools. Additionally, fish can be sold to C.J. during a Fishing Tourney for his usual 1.5× bonus.
