Festivale is anevent in theAnimal Crossing series that occurs inAnimal Crossing: City Folk,Animal Crossing: New Leaf, andAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. It takes place inFebruary orMarch, two days before Ash Wednesday.Pavé hosts the event and during it, confetti falls from the sky, items themed around the event can be obtained, and villagers dance around while singing thetown tune. The player's objective is to collect specific items as requested by Pavé. If the player obtains the items, Pavé gives them an item from thePavé Series (City Folk andNew Leaf) orFestivale Series (New Horizons). InCity Folk, the player must collectcandy, while inNew Leaf andNew Horizons the player must collect feathers.
Festivale is based onCarnival, a festive season occurring beforeLent. It is especially themed afterBrazilian Carnival, though it can also be compared withMardi Gras or other Carnival celebrations in the Americas.
Appearances[edit]
InCity Folk[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: City Folk during the day, neighbors walking around the town challenge the player by asking them to play games, with the chance to win candy. However, if the player loses, they have to give some candy or 500Bells to the villager. There is no limit of how many games can be played with the neighbors, but only the ones outside of their homes offer to play games.
The games are as follows:
- Imaginary Soccer - The neighbor pretends to be a sports commentator and acts out a soccer scene. In response, the player has to select eitherI'll kick left/right orI'll protect left/right. The player has to score or protect two times in a row. This results in the neighbor giving them a random colored item of candy.
- Rock, Paper, Scissors - The neighbor plays a word game of rock, paper, scissors, and the neighbor shouts their answer. The player has to be the first to get it right two times in a row to win a randomly selected item of candy.
- Coin Toss - The neighbor flips a coin and asks the player what side they think is facing up. Players have to do this 3 times in a row; if they lose at all, they lose the game. When they win, they can pick what color candy they want to receive.
- What hand the candy is in - The neighbor asks players which hand they think the candy is in. Their guess must be correct both times in the two rounds; getting it wrong once results in a loss. Once they win, they get a random piece of candy.
- Psychic/ESP Test - The neighbor asks players what the image in their mind is. Players must get both questions right to get the candy. The first question is out of 3 shapes: either circle, triangle, and square. The second question is what fruit players think the villager pictures in their mind: apple, peach, orange, cherry and pear (occasionally, "None" is an option in place of one of the fruit options). One wrong guess results in losing. If players win, they get to pick what color candy they receive.
The candy the player has won can be given to Pavé, who exchanges it for furniture in the Pavé Series. However, players must have three of the color candy he asks for.
If a player buries a pitfall seed on the day of the Festivale, it may turn into candy the following day.
InNew Leaf[edit]
InAnimal Crossing: New Leaf, the event is slightly different compared to the Festivale inCity Folk. Unlike the objective inCity Folk, the player must collect feathers instead of candy for Pavé. During the day, feathers can be seen falling from the sky along with confetti (the feathers can be obtained using anet).
The villagers walking around the town can be found wearing headdresses with different colored feathers on top of them. They may also be heard singing thetown tune. Villagers inside and outside their homes both offer to play games with the player to win feathers. Some villagers offer the player a feather without asking for anything in return.
Pavé appears in the event plaza and asks the player to find feathers of a specific color. If the player obtains the specific number of feathers requested by Pavé or obtains a rainbow feather, then Pavé performs a dance. After Pavé has finished dancing, he gives the player an item from the Pavé Series.
On the seven days before Festivale, theAble Sisters sells either theFestivale tank,Festivale tank dress,Festivale pants, orFestivale accessory. On the day of event, the shop sells all four items.
In Japanese towns, if Festivale falls on March 3 (which occurs in 2014, 2025, 2036, and 2047), theGirl's Day event withIsabelle that normally takes place in the plaza on that day is moved to outside oftown hall, and the Festivale event occurs as normal in the plaza.
Minigames[edit]
- Trading - Villagers may ask to trade one of the player's feathers for theirs (exchange colors).
- Charades - The villager performs emotions depicting a concept. The player then needs to choose the correct concept from a list.
- Rock, Paper, Scissors - The villager starts a countdown whereupon reaching 1 the player selects either rock, paper, or scissors. Only one win is necessary to obtain a feather, and ties will repeat the countdown.
- Made Ya Look - The villager starts by saying "Made Ya...", and then the player must press a direction on
to look in a direction. If the player and villager look in the same direction, the player wins a feather. The player gets 3 chances, and if they do not win after the third chance, they forfeit a feather.
Feathers[edit]
- "I got a pink feather! I can hardly resist the zest!"
- "I got a red feather! It's got the passion of fire!"
- "I got a blue feather! It's as cool as a breeze!"
- "I got a green feather! It's so easy on the eyes!"
- "I got a yellow feather! It begs for your attention!"
- "I got a white feather! It's so so soft and pure!"
- "I got a purple feather! It was yearning for my net!"
- "Yippeeeee! I got a rainbow feather! These are extremely rare!"
InNew Horizons[edit]
While initially absent fromAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Festivale was added in the1.7.0 Free Update.[nb 1] Pavé returns as the host of the event, and like inNew Leaf, the player must catch and bring him colored feathers.[1]
From February 1 until the day before the event,Nook's Cranny sells Festivale-themed furniture, and theAble Sisters sells Festivale-themed clothing.[2][3] Additionally, for a limited time, Nook's Cranny sells theViva Festivale Reaction Set, which includes four Festivale-themedReactions: Feelin' It, Let's Go, Viva, and Confetti.[3]
On the day of Festivale, Pavé asks the player for three feathers of the same color—eitherblue feathers, green feathers, purple feathers, orred feathers—which can be found floating around the island and can be caught with a net. He also gives the player theDIY recipe for arainbow feather, which requires one of each of the other feathers. If the player gives him three feathers of the same color, or a single rainbow feather, Pavé gives them a random item from theFestivale Series, and the color variation of the item given depends on the feather(s) given. After the player exchanges feathers with Pavé nine times, he asks them to bring him three rainbow feathers. If the player brings these, he gives them theFestivale float and goes into a dancing frenzy. This can be repeated indefinitely: nine exchanges of feathers for random items, then three rainbow feathers for the float, etc. It should be noted that, if there is a rainbow feather in the player's inventory, Pavé will ask for it, even if the player also has three of any other color of feather.
During the event, villagers dress up in Festivale-themed clothing (male villagers wearFestivale costume and female villagers wear theFestivale tank dress) and perform Festivale dances with each other. They approach the player to talk to them, but unlike onHalloween, they do not force them into a chat. They can trade one to three feathers with the player. Villagers ask for feathers of the same color as their outfits if the player has any, and feathers of other colors if they do not. The color of the feathers that they are willing to trade for varies.
If Pavé is invited toThe Roost, he mentions that Festivale takes place on a Monday 40 days beforeBunny Day, not counting Sundays. This is in reference to Festivale's real-world connection to Lent.
Feathers[edit]
All five varieties of feather appear randomly around the player's island. Up to 3 of each color of feather may be stacked together, except for the rainbow feather, which does not stack.
When a feather is just offscreen, short whistling sounds can be heard as it tumbles through the air, which grow louder as the player gets closer to the feather. As withballoons, the general direction of the feather relative to the player can be discerned when listening to the game audio in stereo, e.g. through headphones.
Feathers may disappear if the player moves too far away from them or enters a building and comes back out. Unlike some items that spawn in the air for seasonal events, such assnowflakes ormaple leaves, a feather does not disappear if the player misses it with the net multiple times.
- "I caught a green feather! So smooth, so soothing..."
- "I caught a red feather! The passion! It is overwhelming!"
- "I caught a blue feather! As cool as it is hot!"
- "I caught a purple feather! How flirty and fabulous!"
- "WOO-HOO! I caught a rainbow feather! Viva Festivale!"
