DIY
DIY (short for Do It Yourself) is a feature inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons that allows theplayer tocraft orcook items using various materials or ingredients. The player, upon receiving theirNookPhone, will be able to find the DIY Recipes app on the home screen. This allows the player to catalog the DIY recipes they receive, as well as the materials in theirpockets. This app works with anyDIY workbench and allows the player to bookmark recipes, track which recipes they have crafted, and which crafted items are already in their pocket. Starting in the2.0 Free Update, the player can upgrade the app via theBe a Chef! DIY Recipes+ to enable Cooking and catalog cooking recipes via akitchenware. Although both recipes will show up in the upgraded app, they will not be able to crafted together; DIY recipes are limited to DIY workbenches and cooking recipes are limited to kitchenware items. Beginning in version3.0, up to ten of an item can be crafted at once, and crafting materials can be pulled directly from the player's storage.
Initially,Tom Nook allows the player to use his DIY workbench, which is located atResident Services. Upon interacting with it for the first time, Tom Nook teaches the player the basic mechanics of crafting by having the player craft theflimsy fishing rod. The player will also receive aletter from Nintendo early in the game which will have the recipe for a simple DIY workbench attached. The player can craft at any workbench; all workbenches allow access to the player's full catalog of DIY Recipes.
Although there are several varieties of workbenches and kitchenwares that can be used or obtained, all of them function identically and can be used to create any item, with the only differences in these items being size and appearance.
