History

Animal Crossing Wiki (2010)

On July 12, 2010,Animal Crossing Wiki was set up as part of the now-defunct Animal Crossing Forums (animalcrossingforums.net).[1] It was originally run byLeem01, one of the forum's moderators. Although the wiki received an affiliation with NIWA[2] and obtained a few edits, a database problem caused the wiki to shut down without any backups created. The wiki had 51 articles as of its last archived capture on theWayback Machine on August 28, 2010.[3]

Animal Crossing Forums continued for a few months after the wiki's shutdown and Nookipedia's formation, before being shut down in favor of Nookipedia'sThe Bulletin Board forum on January 20, 2011.[4] The animalcrossingforums.net URL currently redirects to nookipedia.com.

Nookipedia (2010–present)

After the original wiki went defunct, Animal Crossing Wiki (animalcrossingwiki.me) was relaunched byJake on October 23, 2010 and separate from the original wiki created in July 2010. Their intention was to gradually obtain a membership in theNintendo Independent Wiki Alliance. In November, staff members fromAnimal Crossing City, who had previously tried ShoutWiki for their move away from Wikia due to a controversial implementation of a new skin, approached Jake and his wiki to help merge their contents from Animal Crossing City to Jake's Animal Crossing Wiki. Later that month, the merger with Animal Crossing City completed, and on November 19, 2010, Animal Crossing Wiki joined NIWA.

At the end of 2010, the staff agreed on a name change to Nookipedia (from Animal Crossing Wiki), to give the wiki a distinct and memorable name, as well as a new site skin. This update was completed in time for new year and launched to the public on January 1, 2011.

From 2010 to 2016, off-wiki discussion was held mostly onThe Bulletin Board forum, which was created alongside the wiki. A NookipediaDiscord server was created in late 2016, and following its launch, most off-wiki discussion moved from there from the forums. The Bulletin Board was shut down on May 31, 2018.

The wiki has since overseen the rise in popularity of theAnimal Crossing series from the likes ofAnimal Crossing: New Leaf andAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, the latter of which resulted in Nookipedia taking on a prominent role in theACNH Spreadsheet Community. In mid-2020, the wiki initiated the implementation of the MediaWiki extensionCargo, allowing for databases of various aspects of theAnimal Crossing series, such as items and villagers. On October 7, 2020, Nookipedia createdACNH.Directory, an open-source directory of fan sites, communities, and resources forAnimal Crossing: New Horizons.[5]
