Sommer-OL 1960 ble arrangert iRoma iItalia fra 25. august til 11. september 1960. Dette var første gang Italia arrangerteolympiske sommerleker , landet var vertsnasjon forvinterlekene iCortina d'Ampezzo i1956 .
Roma ble opprinnelig tildeltSommer-OL 1908 , men på grunn av et utbrudd fravulkanen Vesuv i1906 ble lekene flyttet tilLondon . Sommerlekene i Roma var de første med direktesendte TV-overføringer til hele verden. Alle deltagerne, utenom de fraSovjetunionen , ble velsignet avPaven påPetersplassen .
Lekenes mest dramatiske hendelse skjedde 26. august, da den 23 år gamle syklistenKnud Enemark Jensen fraDanmark kollapset under øvelsen100 kilometer lagtempo . Det danske laget var nesten halvveis i rittet da Jensen fikk merkbare problemer med å holde farten. Så veltet han plutselig av sykkelen og slo hodet i bakken. Han ble raskt fraktet til sykehus, men ble erklært død noen timer senere. Den offisielle årsaken til dødsfallet varsolstikk ogheteslag samt at hodeskallen hans sprakk da den traff bakken. Det ble senere hevdet at han var under påvirkning av flere dopingmidler, blant annetamfetamin , men dette er ikke blitt bevist. Denne hendelsen var blant de sakene som bidro mest til atden internasjonale olympiske komité (IOK) innførtedopingtesting i 1968. Dette var det første dødsfallet under olympiske leker sidenSommer-OL 1912 iStockholm , daFrancisco Lázaro kollapset og døde undermaratonløpet .[ 2] [ 3]
Cassius Clay , senere kjent somMuhammed Ali , ble olympisk mester iboksing i klassen lett tungvekt.Sør-Afrika deltok for siste gang underapartheidregimet og var ikke tilbake igjen før i 1992.Abebe Bikila fraEtiopia vantmaraton barfot og ble med det den første svarte afrikanske olympiske mester. SvenskeGert Fredriksson vant sin sjette olympiske tittel ipadling . Den fremtidige kongen avHellas ,Prins Konstantin , vant gull i seiling. Det ble satt nye verdensrekorder i samtlige svømmeøvelser.
Sovjetunionen vant 15 av 18 mulige medaljer iturn for kvinner og ble i dessuten lekenes mestvinnende nasjon med 43 gull og 104 medaljer totalt.Norge vant én gullmedalje ved seilerenPeder Lunde jr. , som vantFlying Dutchman .
Roma ble valgt ved avstemning underden internasjonale olympiske komités 51. sesjon iParis iFrankrike 16. juni 1955. De andre søkerbyene varLausanne ,Detroit ,Budapest ,Brussel ,Mexico by ogTokyo .[ 4] [ 5]

Åpningsseremonien for de 17. olympiske sommerlekene startet 25. august klokken 16.30 påStadio Olimpico . Utøverne møtte opp i deltakerlandsbyen og marsjerte til Stadio dei Marmi, en strekning på 1,65 km. Deretter marsjerte de inn på olympiastadion nasjonvis medHellas først, og de andre nasjonene i alfabetisk rekkefølge etter hver nasjons navn på italiensk. Det italienske laget avsluttet paraden. Åpningstalen ble holdt av presidenten i organisasjonskomitéen, Andreotti, etterfulgt av presidenten iden internasjonale olympiske komité (IOK),Avery Brundage . Italias president,Giovanni Gronchi erklærte lekene for åpnet. Deretter fulgte tradisjonelle seremonier som heising avdet olympiske flagget , fremføring avden olympiske hymne og overrekkelse av Antwerpen-flagget fra borgermesteren iMelbourne til IOKs president, som igjen overrekket det til borgermesteren avRoma . FriidrettsutøverenGiancarlo Peris fikk æren av å tenneden olympiske ilden , mensden olympiske ed ble holdt avAdolfo Consolini , friidrettsutøver.
