Robin Ian MacDonald Dunbar (Liverpool,28 juni1947) is eenEngelsantropoloog enevolutiebioloog, gespecialiseerd in hetgedrag vanprimaten. Hij is voornamelijk bekend voor hetpostuleren vanhet getal van Dunbar, de vermeendecognitieve grens aan het aantalindividuen waarmee een persoon een stabiele socialerelatie kan onderhouden. Dunbar studeerde aan deUniversiteit van Oxford.

Dunbar is directeur van hetInstitute of Social and Cultural Antropology (ISCA) aan de Universiteit van Oxford (2008). Voorheen was hij projectleider van hetBritish Academy Centenary Research Project ‘Lucy to Language’: The Archaeology of the Social Brain aan deUniversiteit van Liverpool.
