Jon Favreau studeerde drie jaar aan Queens College. Na zijn studie werkte hij enige tijd opWall Street. In 1988 besloot hij naarChicago te gaan om als stand-upcomedian zijn geld te verdienen. Daar sloot hij zich aan bij de comediegroep ImprovOlympic, waar ookChris Farley enMike Myers toe behoorden.
Zijn eerste grote filmrol kreeg hij in de filmRudy. Na de opnamen vanPCU (1994) ging Favreau naarLos Angeles, waar hij het script voorSwingers schreef. De in 1996 uitgebrachte film leverde hem en regisseurDoug Liman deFlorida Film Critics Circle Award op als beste nieuwkomer. Hij speelde ook mee in enkele afleveringen van de succesvolle serieFriends.
Na rollen in onder meerDeep Impact,Very Bad Things enDaredevil, legde Favreau zich vervolgens op regisseerwerk toe. Zijn doorbraak alsregisseur kwam met de stripboekverfilmingIron Man.
In 2009 leende hij zijn stem voor de DisneyfilmG-Force en had hij een bijrol inI Love You, Man.
In 2023 kreeg Favreau een ster op deHollywood Walk of Fame.
