John Laurie (Dumfries,Dumfriesshire,Schotland,25 maart1897 –Chalfont St. Peter,Buckinghamshire,Engeland,23 juni1980) was een Schotsacteur.

Hoewel hij in bijna 120 producties meespeelde werd Laurie vooral bekend als de doemdenkendeSchotse soldaat James Frazer uitDad's Army

Laurie was een karakteracteur, die vaak gecast werd omwille van zijn uitgesproken Schotse voorkomen. Als zoon van een molenaar, besloot hij een studiearchitectuur te beginnen. Met deEerste Wereldoorlog kwam er een einde aan zijn studie en ging hij in dienst. Hij diende in Frankrijk bij The Honourable Artillery Company.^[1] Na de oorlog besloot hij een heel andere richting op te gaan: acteren. Hij schreef zich in bij de Central School of Speech and Drama inLonden.

Zijn eerste toneeloptreden was in 1921. Tussen 1922 en 1939 verscheen hij veelvuldig inShakespeare-stukken in verscheidene theaters. Rond 1930 ging hij ook infilms spelen. Zijn filmdebuut maakte hij inJuno and the Paycock (1930), geregisseerd doorAlfred Hitchcock. Deze deed ook een beroep op hem voor de rol van John Crofter in zijn filmThe 39 Steps (1935). Ondertussen raakte Laurie goed bevriend met nog een Shakespeare-acteur:Laurence Olivier. De twee verschenen samen in de filmAs You Like It (1936).

Tijdens deTweede Wereldoorlog deed Olivier andermaal een beroep op hem voor de filmHenry V (1944) naar hetgelijknamige toneelstuk van Shakespeare. Later verscheen Laurie nog inHamlet (1948) enRichard III (1955), hoewel hij als karakteracteur ook comedy kon spelen. Hij sloot zich aan bij deHome Guard in zijn woonplaatsPaddington.

In 1978 bracht hij het boekMy favourite stories of Scotland uit.

Laurie trouwde in 1924 met Florence Saunders, die echter in 1926 overleed. Hij hertrouwde in 1928 met Oona V. Todd-Naylor en kreeg een dochter met haar. Laurie stierf op 83-jarige leeftijd aan eenemfyseem enlongfalen. Hij was de derde acteur van de cast vanDad's Army die overleed.
