Two TV Stations Here to Exchange Network Affiliations Wednesday

Two TV Stations Here to Exchange Network Affiliations Wednesday By George E. Condon Radio-Television Editor The biggest upheaval in the history of Cleveland television will occur this week when two of the city's three TV stations swap networks, upsetting the tuning habits of millions of viewers in the northeastern Ohio area. Involved in the big switch will be Stations WEWS and WXEL and the networks of the Columbia Broad- casting Co. and the DuMont The present pattern of network - station affiliations here has WE W S (Channel 5) carrying the programs of C. B. S.- TV and WXEL (Channel 8) carrying the output of A. B. C. - TV and Du Mont. Station WNBK (Channel 3) carries the shows of the National Broadcasting Co. GEORGE E. CONDON Beginning on the morning of this Wednesday-March 2- that network - station pattern will be changed. The programs of the C. B. S.-TV network will switch from WEWS (5) to WXEL (8). The programs of A. B. C.-TV and DuMont will be transferred from WXEL (8) to WEWS (5). Programs of N. B. C.-TV will remain, undisturbed, on WNBK (3). Starting Wednesday Viewers who have been accustomed to tuning Channel 5 for such programs as "Studio One," "Toast of the Town," "Arthur Godfrey," "The Garry Moore Show," "The Jack Benny Show," "Perry Como," "Jo Stafford," "Halls of Ivy" and other popular shows will find them on Channel 8 starting on Wednesday. Conversely, TV fans who have looked to Channel 8 for "Disneyland," "United States Steel Hour," "Elgin Hour," "Danny Thomas," "Roy Bolger," "Ozzie and Harriet," "Chance of a Lifetime," "Voice of Firestone," "Cavalcade of America," "Walter Winchell," and other A. B. C.-TV and DuMont shows, will find them on Channel 5 beginning this Wednesday. The popular program of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, presented on the DuMont Network, will remain on Station WXEL through the program of March 15. Beginning with the program of March 22, the show will be on Station WEWS. Myrus Switches Even some local programs will be affected by the exchange of networks by the two Cleveland Television Network. stations. "Myrus," for example, who is seen on WXEL now every Monday night at 9:30 will change to Tuesday nights at 8 on WXEL beginning March 21. Replacing him on the 9:30 p.m. Monday time slot will be the C. B. S.-TV program, "December Bride," starring Spring Byington. Some network shows now seen in Cleveland will be dropped from the local air entirely. And some C. B. S. shows which cannot be fitted into the WXEL schedule will remain temporarily on WEWS. Robert Q. Lewis is a case in point. The "Alice Weston Show" will be seen instead on Channel 8. "The Big Payoff," a C. B. S.-TV show now appearing five afternoons a week at 3 on WEWS, will be carried only three days a week -Monday, Wednesday and Friday —on WXEL. The popular Edward Murrow program, "Person to Person," which has not been carried WEWS, will not be carried by WXEL. The program, "I Led Three Lives," will occupy the 10:30 Friday night time spot, as it did on WEWS. The network changeover will end relationship of more than seven years' duration between WEWS, the city's first television station, and C. B. S.-TV. In its first years on the air, however, WEWS carried all networks, including A. B. C.-TV and DuMont, and the switch of networks will be a kind of homecoming for those two. It is inevitable that a certain amount of confusion will prevail among viewers who tune by habit, but it will be short lived among those who consult the television log each day. Not Quite Family Affair Stephen McNally has a problem with six of his seven children because he let Stephen, jr., age 9, make his acting debut in the "Stage 7" drama, "Tiger at Noon," on C. B. S. Television. McNally has asked the "Stage 7" producer to look for a story in which the whole family can appear. of N. Broadway will TV) a that moved a Weaver, "The including
