Paxson to rebroadcast Brokaw

Paxson to rebroadcast Brokaw D PAXSON, FROM 1C rebroadcast Brokaw's news show at 7:30 p.m. nationwide, one hour after it airs on network-affiliated stations. A onemonth test begins in May, and Nightly News is expected to become a regular part of PAX's schedule in the fall. In 11 markets where there are NBC-owned-and-operated stations, the local early and late newscasts also will be rebroadcast on PAX at 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Locally, WTVJ-NBC 6's late news began to air on PAX, which is seen in South Florida on WPXM-Channel 35, in early April, and the NBC 6 evening news will begin shortly on PAX. "This is an opportunity to take a good news product and have more opportunities to distribute it. It's the way the world is becoming," said Don Browne, president and general manager of NBC 6. "We haven't really promoted it yet because we wanted to see if it worked well, which it does. But we will begin promoting it on our station soon." Eventually, the companies say NBC affiliates will be asked to participate in the plan. Analysts suggest, however, that they may not like the pros- The deal gives PAX a broader range of programming that could attract more viewers. pect of NBC programming appearing elsewhere. "The affiliates certainly aren't happy about it," said analyst Peter Lerner of Arnhold & S. Bleichroeder. "They're concerned that this type of time shifting will take away from ratings.' The PAX network is carried on smaller stations and cable systems throughout the country, and it often overlaps in markets served by NBC affiliates. But Randy Falco, president of the NBC TV Network, said the so-called joint sales agreements should provide opportunities for program tie-ins, "which will drive cross-promotion and sales at the local level." "This is just the beginning of a dynamic programming and distribution partnership with NBC and its affiliates," said Jeff Sagansky, president and CEO of Paxson Communications. PAX already rebroadcasts NBC's game show, Twenty One on Saturday nights. U.S. Olympic Team trial coverage, which will begin June 3, also will "provide an exciting promotional base for PAX's new fall season and will help build momentum" for NBC's Olympic coverage, Sagansky said. PAX will broadcast 28 hours of original coverage in the trials for archery, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, marathon, rowing, sailing, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weight lifting and wrestling over 14 consecutive Saturdays from 9 to 11 p.m. In addition, PAX will rebroadcast trial highlights in sports such as swimming, diving, gymnastics and track and field that have previously aired on NBC. Carrying NBC programming on PAX was part of the understanding when NBC acquired a $415 million stake last fall in Paxson, which owns and operates the nation's largest broadcast television station group and PAX network. Paxson had been searching for a deep-pocket partner that could provide additional programming - especially in news.
