Filmmaker to Discuss Impact of Horror, Science Fiction Films

The seventh Arts & Lectures event of the fall semester features David Weiner, a filmmaker, editor and writer.

David WeinerThe event is at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7 in the USU Ballroom. The event is free for Cal State San Marcos students, faculty, staff and alumni. Community members can reserve tickets online via theArts & Lectures website

In this moderated Q&A, Weiner will share his experience as a journalist and a curator of nostalgia as a writer and director. Weiner will address how films in the horror and science fiction genre historically have had social and political impact embedded in their narrative.

Weiner is the writer and director of the three-part 1980s horror genre documentaries “In Search of Darkness'' and the five-hour ’80s sci-fi documentary “In Search of Tomorrow.” He is also executive producer of “Aliens Expanded,” a deep-dive documentary about the “Aliens” film franchise. A three-decade veteran of the entertainment industry both on the set and behind a keyboard, Weiner was editor of the iconic “Famous Monsters of Filmland'' magazine, a writer for The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision and a senior editor at “Entertainment Tonight” for 13 years.

CSUSM’s Arts & Lectures series offers a diverse lineup of artistic, cultural and scholarly events every semester based on input and proposals from students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. Attendees can reserve tickets online via theArts & Lectures website.
