Bournemouth closed the gap on League Two leaders Rochdale to five points after beating new Cheltenham manager Mark Yates' side at Whaddon Road.
Yates was in charge for the first time since officially being appointed and his struggling side were much improved.
But, after Jeff Goulding headed against a post, Liam Feeney scored the winner with a fine curling effort.
Cherries keeper Shwan Jalal saved Ashley Eastham's header on the line and Barry Hayles skewed another chance.
New Cheltenham Town Manager Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I thought we were really good today, we were the better team. The players gave me everything even though we've known each other for a couple of days. The only one thing we didn't do was get the points
"All I was concerned about was the performance, it gives me plenty of encouragement, it gives the fans plenty of encouragement because they saw today what they want to see. They saw energy, commitment, desire and above all, a bit of quality.
"I had to come in and put my own stamp on the team. I want them to go on and enjoy themselves, I want them to play the right way, I want them to win games and if they show me the work rate, the commitment that they did today, they won't have any problem with me."
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent:
"We needed it off the back of the Morecambe defeat. It's important to bounce back - an important result for us.
"I didn't think we played very well in the first half, I thought Cheltenham were the better the team so I thought we had to change something.
"It was a bit nip and tuck but that's part of the tactical battle. That's what you enjoy."
