Naval Encyclopedia

This is the new 2026 website for Naval Encyclopedia. She is just out of the dry-dock after a major overhaul and in post-refit sea trials. Full Commission is expected in February.About the new logo: If the base colors remain the same, inspired by the sea, its graphic appearance is brand new. The original one was essentially an anchor split with a forward view of the Bismarck. However, in the long run, it appears difficult to decipher, and impossible to simplify more as it was in 2022. Now, the new logo expresses a duality, traduced in two ways: 1-Warships are at the same “cooler” than cargo ships, but also instant steel coffins for thousands. 2-Civilian Aspects: The new direction of naval encyclopedia from 2026 onwards is a leap into the civilian fleets from the industrial revolution to this day. Thus, the logo reflects the dark and bright side of the “naval” sphere, war and peace. All classes from the earliest packet boats to transatlantic liners, from the last merchant steel clippers to modern container ships, specialized vessels to humble trawlers.

Naval Encyclopedia is the first online warship museum. She was laid down back in September 1995, launched in December 1996 and completed in March 1997, at sea for almost 30 years and counting. But What is really naval Encyclopedia ?

Dedicated to the history of all ships of the industrial era and 20th century, so 1820 to 1990, but also earlier times. The main difference for this early period is to study ships types through some famous examples.

The brave old ship provides since 1997 a one-stop place for everything related to naval warfare through ships classes, going back to antiquity to the present day, with particular focus on WW1, WW2 and the Cold War, albeit extending to the present day and all the world's navies, as well as to the Nineteenth Century.

This long endeavour is planned to last until at least 2030, given the scope of the subject, with future entries in opacity in the new side menu. Naval encyclopedia also goes through some civilian aspects (clippers, liners, oil platforms, naval tech in general) and battles/tactics as well, planning a subdomain to come soon in April.

Naval Encyclopedia is constantly modified and upgraded since years. This current version is #7. After her last refit in 2023, the present ship is currently in her 2025-26 overhaul for the next five years of service. The crusty hull also needed serious scrapping to regain full speed. Numerous additions over the years also leads to a complete machinery overhaul.
