Moonbug Entertainment is one of the biggest digital players in the kids music and animation industry, having rolled up YouTube channels including Cocomelon, Little Baby Bum and Blippi in acquisitions. As of August this year, it also has adistribution, publishing and licensing deal with Universal Music Group.
So, how is its business doing? Financial resultsfiled with Companies House in the UK offer its latest figures.
Moonbug’s revenues grew by 71.1% in 2020 to £39.6m (around $53.8m). The majority of those revenues (£29.3m) came from ‘distribution and self-serve platform revenue – i.e. YouTube – although Moonbug also made £5.5m from ‘originals and brand productions’ and £4.8m from licensing and merch.
Moonbug recorded an operating loss of £1.4m for the year, although it would have been profitable had it not been for £6.8m of costs relating to “a legal dispute” – we think that may bethis copyright infringement lawsuit that the company filed against a Chinese rival to its Cocomelon YouTube channel in September.
