Pada tahun305 SM, setelah menguasai Mesir, Ptolemaios mengangkat dirinya sebagai Raja (yakni Ptolemaios I) untuk seluruh warga Mesir. Keturunannya menguasai Mesir hingga jatuh ke tanganbangsa Rom pada tahun 30 M olehAugustus.
Salah satu keturunan Ptolemeus yang terkenal adalahCleopatra VII, ratu terakhir sebelum Mesir jatuh ke tangan bangsa Rom.
