Valid Species

Updated 26 November 2024

A total of 3,727 extant species of Culicidae are currently formally recognised. They are listed in the PDFs attached below. Species of Aedini are listed inValid Extant Species of Culicidae according to the phylogenetic classification of Reinertet al. (2009); they are listed inValid Extant Species (compositeAedes) based on the contemporary polyphyletic classification of the genusAedes(seeWilkersonet al., 2015,2021;Harbach, 2018: Section 8;Harbach, 2024). Currently recognized extinct (fossil) species are listed inValid Fossil Species of Culicidae. Species names (inboldface) are followed by their authorship and year of publication, and this combination is followed by the generic (subgeneric) placement of the species (in boldfaceindigo). Parentheses around authors' names and dates indicate that a species is currently placed in a genus other than the one in which the author(s) originally placed it.
