Freedom Mobile customers are struggling to connect to service on Toronto’s newest transit lines, but the company says that will change soon.
Toronto’s Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown LRT opened up over the weekend, and while it seems to be good for most transit riders, not everyone is having a great time. Several Freedom Mobile customers report having connectivity issues in the tunnels on Line 5, as well as on Line 6.
In athread on the Freedom Mobile subreddit, several customers detailed their experience trying to get connected on the new transit lines. Bell, Rogers, and Telus all have service, but Freedom Mobile has none.
Strangely, Freedom customers report being unable to connect to Freedom’s Nationwide network, either. Nationwide refers to when Freedom customers roam on other Canadian providers’ networks when outside of Freedom’s network.
When reached by MobileSyrup about the service issues, Freedom noted that it’s working to activate coverage:
“Our teams are in the process of activating coverage on Toronto’s new transit lines, and customers should start seeing signal over the next few days. We’re pleased to be bringing service to riders on these new routes.”
However, Freedom didn’t offer an explanation for the lack of service so far.
Notably,Line 5 uses Bell for network connectivity. The carrier offers open access to other wireless providers, allowing them to offer service in Line 5’s tunnels and stations.
That’s a departure from the TTC subway, which uses Rogers as the lead operator after the companyacquired the Canadian division of BAI Communications in 2023. BAI previously owned the infrastructure for service in the subway, butFreedom was the only carrier that worked with BAI at the time.
