History
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was revealed as the final announcement in the March 27, 2025Nintendo Direct. The reveal trailer showcased Miis interacting with each other and the environment, with the game taking place on a tropical island. Some Miis speak using a synthesized voice and a Mii based onAnne is shown in adream sequence withAlice.[6]
When responding to criticisms about the lack of same-sex relationships inTomodachi Life in 2014, Nintendo pledged that if a new installment in theTomodachi series was created, they would design a more inclusive gameplay experience,[7]. Same-sex relationships were later confirmed in the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct.[1]
On September 12, 2025, the game was detailed in another Nintendo Direct presentation, showcasing the new in-game Mii Maker, how to formrelationships between Miis, and more unique dream sequences. At the end of the segment, a breaking news broadcast fromMii News revealed the game is set to release in Spring 2026.[8]
The game was given its own dedicated Nintendo Direct on January 29, 2026, lasting 20 minutes.[1]
Gameplay
Mii Maker
The game is confirmed to feature an in-gameMii Maker with new options. These options include a "Sub color" for hair, editing the bangs and back of hair separately, and customization for ears, an option that has never been included in any previous Mii Maker.[9] Additionally, two options for facial details and makeup can be seen in the Mii Maker menu, but remain undocumented. Miis can also be given a gender (Male, Female, or Nonbinary) and dating preferences (any combination of gender, including all or none). Text-to-speech andpersonality options return fromTomodachi Life.[1]
Island
TheMii Apartments building has been replaced in favor of multiple homes for individual Miis. Miis default to being the only one in their house, but up to 7 other Miis can move in with them.[1] Miis can be interacted with in their homes in various ways, including solvingproblems, feeding them and raising theirhappiness level. New to the series is the implementation of player-controlled actions to cause interactions between Miis.[10] The player can use a hand cursor to manually move around the island and perform certain actions, such as picking up and dropping Miis with the button. This allows the player to control which Miis become friends or develop a relationship, instead of it being determined randomly by the Mii itself. Miis can also be assigned quirks that affect their actions.[1] Dreams also appear to return from the series.[8] The island itself can be modified as well, changing what the ground looks like, the shape of the island, and where buildings are.[1]

Trivia
- Unlike withTomodachi Life, only one English logo for this game exists. This logo is similar in appearance to its predecessor'sEuropean logo, with the main difference being that the text "Tomodachi Life" is black instead of red, matching the series'Japanese logo.
- Unlike most games featuringMiis, the Miis in this game are depicted having human-like ears. However, some games would give Miis ears, either via a Mii variation or a costume, whose color often corresponds to the Mii's own skin tone.
- Miis were originally depicted with ears during the development ofWii Sports, as shown by beta versions at E3 2006.[11] However, they were not retained in the final game. Prior to this game, they were most recently depicted with ears in theSuper Nintendo World attractionMario Kart: Bowser's Challenge.
- Coincidentally, the game's subtitle "Living the Dream" is almost identical to "Livin' the Dream", the default English title for the rap song in theConcert Hall inTomodachi Life.
