Technical specifications[]

Nausicaans attackECS Fortunate.
Ships of this class replacedTellarite andVulcan ships hauling cargo between Earth and United Earth'scolonies atProxima,Terra Nova andVega colony. The Y-class was produced by theUnited Earth Space Probe Agency (UESPA). TheJ-class was the largest variant produced for the Y-class. The J-class was larger than the Y-class by 50% and reached a higherwarp factor due to enlarging thewarp nacelles. As a result, a J-class freighter could save 146days on an Earth-Proxima round trip compared to the Y-class.
Primaryshipyards of construction includedNewport News Orbital Complex at Earth,Copernicus Ship Yards onLuna and theLagrange Facilities atLagrange 4 Sol.
Suggested mission profiles includedcivilian ormerchant marine, logistical orquartermaster, and colony support. The spaceframe traits were typical for acivilian starship and aUnited Earth starship. The power of its systems were rated 04 for comms, 05 for engines, 06 for structure, 04 forcomputers, 05 forsensors and 04 forweapons. Weapons consisted ofphase cannons.Crew departments included conn, engineering andmedicine but lacked command, security and science. The default defense mechanism waspolarized hull plating. The crews of these pioneering vessels were called (space-)boomers.
Concerning naming conventions, Y- and J-class freighters were named by their crews, for instance for lovers, cities of birth and famous historical vessels.Standard prefixes wereWS for Warp Ship,SS for Singel Screw andECS for Earth Cargo Ship. ECS applied to freighters in service to UESPA and the Earth Cargo Service.
The class remained in service well into the24th century. At least one vessel, theECS Horizon, retired tolunarorbit in2169 for display at theBoomer Museum. (Star Trek Adventures RPGmodule:Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)
Y class ships were built to replace the earlierJ-class starships that had been used by Earth's cargo service in the early22ndcentury. The design principles of a ClassY were similar to those of the earlier classJ ships - with the major difference being that theY class was a larger vessel. (ENTepisodes: "Horizon", "Fortunate Son")
The ships had a crew complement of 23; however, this did not account for children which may have been born to the crew members during their long voyages.Y class ships were capable of a maximum speed ofwarp 1.8. The eight cargo modules attached to the sides of the ship gave the ship a total capacity of 20 kilotons. The ships came with a singleplasma cannon, however most freightercaptains upgraded their weapons as soon as possible as their cargoes made them attractive targets forpirates such as theNausicaans.
In2151, CaptainKeene considered upgrading the ship'score to awarp 3 engine. (ENTepisode: "Fortunate Son")
TheY class freighter was also known asFortunate-class. (STvideo game:Legacy)

People of the Open Sky ship.
ThePeople of the Open Sky were subjects ofthe Chain who rejected their society and formed a ragtagfleet. A portion of the fleet consisted of ships of the mid-22nd centuryAlpha andBeta Quadrant cultures. The fleet arriving atDeep Space 9 inNovember2385 included at least one 2150s-era Y-class freighter. (DS9novel:The Missing)
