TheUSSRepublic (NCC-1371) was aFederationConstitution-classheavy cruiser in service toStarfleet in the23rd century. By2251, theRepublic was serving as aStarfleet Academy training vessel and was commanded byCaptainRollin Bannock. (TOSepisode: "Court Martial",TOS -My Brother's Keepernovel:Republic)

In the comicTheEnterprise Murder Case!, the USSRepublic was depicted as aBaton Rouge-class vessel with the registry NCC-1378. It is possible that the ship was upgraded from Baton Rogue to Constitution class.

Training vessel[]

In early 2251,James T. Kirk andBenjamin Finney were assigned to a training mission on theRepublic. During this tour, Kirk reported a circuit to theatomic matter piles accidentally left open by Finney, an act which severely strained their friendship. (TOSepisode: "Court Martial")

In late 2251, theRepublic was assigned a two week patrol of theKlingonNeutral Zone, as well as being assigned a top-secret mission to deliver forcefield barriers and surveillance equipment to aplanet containing theKlingon rebels, theM'tachtar. After delivering the equipment, theRepublic was redirected to theBeta Bora system so they could represent the Federation at the signing of the peace treaty between the two warring factions onHeir'tzan. An assassination attempt foiled byCadetsJames T. Kirk,Gary Mitchell, andPhelana Yudrin ensured that the peace initiative was successful. (TOS -My Brother's Keepernovel:Constitution)

TheRepublic was notable at one point for having a crew consisting mainly ofKzinti,Orions andTrisk, with only sixHumans. One of those humans wasMaria Kellogg, who served aschief engineering officer. (TOSnovel:Ishmael)

In2265, theRepublic visitedTheta Aurigne III.EnsignCarolyn Palamas led expeditions that explored underwater ruins of the world's lostcivilizations, retrieving thousands ofhistorical artifacts. (STvideo game:Starship Creator)

In2268, theRepublic, under the command ofCaptainManchu, along with theUSSExcelsior was dispatched toAltair VII in response to an unknown entity had been attacking several targets in theBeta Quadrant. Captain Kirk and the crew of theUSSEnterprise discovered that a vast machine planet intelligence from a parallel universe calledNagha was behind the attacks. (TOS -The New Voyages 2short story: "The Sleeping God")

In the 2260s, theRepublic was under the command of CaptainRichard Cornelius Patterson. Her non-classified assignments during this period where the transport of an investigating committee toVardaine and sensor scans of the remains of theGadani IIsupernova. She also recovered amessage buoy which was launched from theUSSCalypso, which detailed that vessel's destruction byparasitic creatures. In2269, theRepublic was attacked by aVardaineduplicate of theUSSEnterprise. Captain Patterson and nearly his entire crew were killed in the battle, and theRepublic was left a derelict in the attack. The originalEnterprise later engaged and destroyed the Vardaine duplicate, withRepublic suffering minor damage from an ion storm from having passed overCalypso's position twenty-two-and-a-half hours later. (TOSvideo game:25th Anniversary mission: Vengeance;TOSnovel:Vulcan!)

Missing in action[]

TheRepublic (registry number NCC-1373) was listed as "Missing" onreference stardate 2/0808.26 (26 August 2208, equivalent to the late2260s in the standard timeline) while under the command of CaptainRichard V. Masterson, seven months after its last known contact. Many years later (reference stardate2/2304, six months after theCetacean Probe crisis, equivalent to standard year2286), theUSSExcalibur underCaptainPreye discovered theRepublic on the fringes ofFederation space in theStyx Rift region where it had disappeared. TheRepublic's crew appeared to be somewhat disoriented and did not appear to have aged since the ship's disappearance. According to the crew, the ship'sEdoan science officer had become unstable or insane, wiped the ship's astrographic databases and destroyed hardcopy maps before committing suicide, leaving theRepublic to slowly wander in the Rift until they could re-establish their bearings enough to return to the Federation. Before this data could be obtained from theExcalibur, events exposed that theRepublic's crew was under the influence ofneural parasites (of the type that once infestedDeneva), encountered at the site of a600-year-old wreck site the ship had investigated. As an Edoan, the science officer was immune to the effects of the parasites, and destroyed the navigational data to prevent the infected crew from returning to Federation space and unleashing the parasites on potentially dozens of worlds. (FASA RPGmodules:Lost and Presumed Dead,Star Trek III Sourcebook Update)

As an RPG scenario, no "official" outcome of the incident was given. The source was unclear as to whether the lack of aging of theRepublic's crew was connected to the parasite's influence or was only due to relativistic effects of sublight travel.

Having been recorded as being destroyed on referencestardate2/0801,Republic was replaced with a namesake, theEnterprise-subclasscruiser, theUSSRepublic. (FASA RPGmodule:Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

By the time the predecessorRepublic was recovered, there were two ships namedRepublic in existence, and both in service.

Refit service[]

By the2280s, this vessel had been outfitted as anEnterprise-subclassheavy cruiser (CA). (TOSvideo game:Starfleet Command)

At some point, theRepublic endedOrion piracy in theVolus Corridor. In2287, the ship prevented Klingon incursions across theKlingon Neutral Zone. (Decipher RPGmodule:Starships)
