The secondUSSDefiant (NX-74205) was aFederationDefiant-classescortstarship inStarfleet service in the late24th century. This ship was originally designated theUSSSão Paulo (NCC-75633), and was one of a number of vessels to bear the nameDefiant.
Service history and disposition[]
In2375, theSão Paulo was under the command ofVice AdmiralWilliam Ross for delivery toStarbaseDeep Space 9, where she was transferred to the command ofCaptainBenjamin Sisko. Sisko received special dispensation fromStarfleet Operations to rename theSão Paulo to USSDefiant in honor of the fallenUSSDefiant, which was lost at theSecond Battle of Chin'toka. TheDefiant took part in the final battle of theDominion War, theBattle of Cardassia. (DS9episodes: "The Dogs of War", "What You Leave Behind")
In2378, theDefiant was docked atDeep Space 9 where it was stolen byWorf in his quest to stopKahless. To fight the mad emperor and his followers, theRed Path, Worf recruited various controversial individuals to form a misfit crew that grew to compriseAmbassadorSpock,B'Elanna Torres,Ro Laren, anameless Orion medic,Lore andCommanderSela. (DFTcomic: "Issue 1")
After theDay of the Blood,Starfleet Command discreetly sold theDefiant to Worf so he and his crew could act asbounty hunters and retrieve high-priority targets with plausible deniability on the Federation's behalf. (DFT -Another Piece of the Actioncomic: "Part 1")
After theDefiant crew had freedAntara from theRomulan Star Empire, CaptainJean-Luc Picard discovered the arrangement and threatened to expose it, resulting in Starfleet reinstating Worf andB'Elanna Torres. Worf subsequently turned over captaincy of theDefiant to Torres while he took a leave to repair his relationship withAlexander Rozhenko.Spock likewise left the ship so he could focus on mitigating the threat of theupcoming supernova. (DFT -The Stars of Homecomic: "Part 5")
In2384, theDefiant was part of a Starfleet armada dispatched to intercept theUSSProtostar. During one particular instance, theDefiant briefly fired upon theProtostar as its crew attempted to evade the fleet. Like the rest of the fleet, theDefiant was infected byLiving Construct, its weapons being turned on theUSSDauntless before theProtostar self-destructing destroyed the Construct. (PRDepisode: "Supernova")
By2401, theDefiant was decommissioned and displayed at theStarfleet Museum. (PICepisode: "The Bounty")
Path to the 25th century[]
The USSDefiant would continue its service withStarfleet well into the25th century, and was among the vessels that responded to the Borg invasion of theVega colony in2409. (STO -Tutorialmission: "Assimilation of the Innocent")
CaptainJames Kurland would command theDefiant on quick response missions such as when theIKSKang attacked theMinos Korva system in2409. (STO -Cardassian Strugglemissions: "Venture into Deep Space", "The Tribble with Klingons")
When Deep Space 9 came under attack by Dominion forces underLoriss andFirstKar'ukan Captain Kurland and theDefiant helped defend escapingshuttlecraft. He again commanded the ship during the subsequent assault with theKlingon Defense Force to retake the station. (STO -The 2800missions: "Second Wave", "Boldly They Rode")
Alternate realities[]
First Splinter timeline[]
Following the war, theRomulan Senate moved to allow theDefiant to keep the borrowed Romulancloaking device it utilized. Such a move recognized the importance of the vessel, and Deep Space 9, as the first line of defense against further Dominion attacks. (DS9novel:Avatar, Book One)
In April of2376, theDefiant was undergoing repairs and upgrades when Deep Space 9 was attacked by a trio of rogueJem'Hadar fighters. TheDefiant was rushed into operation, and managed to destroy one of the ships before a heavy bombardment killed the vessel'scommanding officer, CommanderTiris Jast.LieutenantEzri Dax assumed command and destroyed the second vessel. Dax, with the help of a Jem'Hadar vessel commanded byTaran'atar, then destroyed the final vessel using theDefiant'swarhead module. (DS9novel:Avatar, Book One)
In2381, after Ezri Dax had been promoted toCaptain and commanding officer of theUSSAventine, she reflected upon this incident during theBorg Invasion of 2381, questioning her command abilities. Her first officer,Sam Bowers, insisted that it was her decisiveness in such situations that made her a qualified commander. (ST -Destinynovel:Mere Mortals)
After launching a new communications module at theGamma Quadrant terminus of theBajoran wormhole, theDefiant participated in the evacuation of the colony onEuropa Nova during theGateways Crisis, and discovered that the Gateway in orbit of Europa Nova opened into theDelta Quadrant. (TNG -Gatewaysnovel:Doors Into Chaos;DS9 -Gatewaysnovel:Demons of Air and Darkness)
Soon afterward, theDefiant was damaged while escorting vessels containingEuropani refugees from the homeworld of the highly xenophobicJarada, who attacked the convoy. TheDefiant was repaired, and the refit for the exploration mission to theGamma Quadrant was subsequently completed. By this time, theshuttlepods had been removed and the pod bays reconfigured, both bio-chemical andstellar cartography labs had been installed, thesensors recalibrated, and thelibrary computer system expanded from a purely military mission profile to a military/sciences hybrid. (DS9novel:Twilight)
Sometime prior to the Gamma Quadrant mission, theDefiant, under the command ofElias Vaughn, was among a fleet of ships dealing with theMalkus Artifacts atNarendra III. (TNG -The Brave and the Bold, Book Twonovella:The Final Artifact)
Corps of Exploration[]
During a three-month exploratory mission into the Gamma Quadrant, theDefiant made first contact with eleven different species, the first of which was theVahni Vahltupali civilization. When energy pulses threatened the planet's destruction, theDefiant destroyed moon chunks before they hit the Vahni planet, then found the source of the energy pulses. TheDefiant was damaged at the planetPrentara, shutting down the energy pulses by allowing theInamuri to enter this realm of existence. (DS9novel:Twilight)
In July, theDefiant was en route through an unknown sector of space when the ship was caught in aCheka web weapon. TheYrythny vesselAvaril, came to theDefiant's aid by stowing theDefiant in theAvaril's cargo hold so she could be repaired atLuthia. TheDefiant and theAvaril then went to a commerce shipping lane to get more supplies. After theDefiant was repaired, her crew was able to stop a Yrythny traitor from kidnappingNog. (DS9novel:This Gray Spirit)
TheDefiant later made first contact with theD'Naali andNyazen, stumbling upon a battle between the two forces for control of an extra-dimensional object known as theCathedral object. The Object's unusual properties temporarily caused three crew members to lose modifications that had been made to their bodies over the years, but the crew was later able to cure the affected personnel after discovering the Object's nature. (DS9novel:Cathedral)
Some weeks later, theDefiant discovered the wreckage of a Jem'Hadar vessel and theUSSValkyrie, a ship that had been assimilated by theBorg Collective, on an unnamed planet in the Gamma Quadrant. On the planet, the crew located two survivors of the battle between the ships - a youngFounder and the assimilatedRuriko Tenmei. TheDefiant crew attempted to remove Borg technology from Tenmei's body, but the assimilation imperative proved to be too strong, and she was killed before she could assimilate her daughter,EnsignPrynn Tenmei.
The young Founder was returned to theDominion in an amicable exchange with a Jem'Hadar ship who had recovered the long-missingJake Sisko andOpaka Sulan. (DS9novel:Lesser Evil)

Return to the Alpha Quadrant[]
Upon arriving in the Alpha Quadrant, theDefiant was escorted to Deep Space 9 by theCardassian warshipCDS Trager, commanded byGulAkellen Macet, who was assisting Starfleet during theParasite crisis.ColonelKira Nerys later defied orders and took theDefiant toBajor where she confronted the ParasiteSpawnmother at the monastery atAshalla. (DS9novel:Unity)
When the BajoranSidau village was destroyed in an unprovoked attack, newly-commissioned Captain Kira Nerys took theDefiant on a long-distance chase after aBesinian freighter that left Bajor and was suspected of being responsible for the destruction of the village. TheDefiant and the freighter battled,Defiant crewmembers boarded the freighter, only to find the crew dead, leaving the attack on the Sidau village a mystery. (DS9novel:Bajor: Fragments and Omens)
Later service[]
In early2377, theDefiant chased Taran'atar to an oldObsidian Order prison onHarkoum after he attacked Captain Kira andRo Laren and kidnapped Prynn Tenmei. (DS9novel:Warpath)
In2382, theDefiant transportedJulian Bashir andSarina Douglas to a rendezvous point with theUSSAventine nearBreen space. (ST -Typhon Pactnovel:Zero Sum Game)
As of2383 theDefiant was still assigned to DS9. In that year the ship was assigned to interdiction duties during the evacuation of the station following the discovery of a series of bombs in the station's fusion reactor. When the Breen freighterRen Fejin exited the wormhole,Defiant began detailed scans looking for cloaked vessels accompanying it. The ship was immediately attacked by theIRWEletrix, which had assisted the Breen ship during a raid on aDominion shipyard. (ST -Typhon Pactnovel:Plagues of Night)
Later on in the battle,Defiant managed to overpower theEletrix which proceeded to come to a halt amidst the battle. As theDefiant ordered the warbird to surrender, the commander of the ship ordered a self destruct.Eletrix exploded a few minutes later. After the battle ended with a Federation victory, theDefiant was ordered to interceptRen Fejin as it tried to escape.Defiant caught up to the ship and took the crew into custody. (ST -Typhon Pactnovel:Raise the Dawn)
At least two weeks after the destruction of Deep Space 9,Starfleet Command placed theDefiant temporarily under the command ofBenjamin Sisko. The ship proceeded into the Gamma Quadrant to determine if theTyphon Pact had met with the Dominion, and whether or not an alliance was being discussed. Upon arriving in the Gamma Quadrant, the ship set a course for the Founder's first homeworld. Upon arriving in orbit, the shuttleSagan headed to the surface to seek an audience with the Founders. Once landed, Ben Sisko and Prynn Tenmei were ambushed by Jem'Hadar, lead by theVortaVannis. They demanded to know why Starfleet had returned, and wantedDefiant to reveal itself. Lieutenant CommanderStinson refused to decloak the vessel until the Jem'Hadar fighters which arrived in orbit left. They left once Captain Sisko convinced the Jem'Hadar to allow them to speak withOdo. After Odo was spoken to, he allowed theDefiant to examine the site of theft of the Dominion's ship building technology, previously stolen by the Typhon Pact. Once the crew of theDefiant learned there was no alliance, they proceeded to head back to the Alpha Quadrant. (ST -Typhon Pactnovel:Raise the Dawn)

Background[]
In theStar Trek: Deep Space Nine CompanionMA,Ronald D. Moore stated that he intended for the ship to be designatedDefiant-A but it wasn't shown on screen because it would have been prohibitive to modify and re-shoot the CGI model for one episode and also would not have allowed stock footage to have been used.
