Thetype-3 personnel shuttlecraft was a type of smallspacecraft, ashuttlecraft in use by theFederation'sStarfleet in the24th century.
History and specifications[]
In the2330sdecade, thestarshipUSSStargazer was equipped with a type-3, as well twotype-4 shuttlecraft and twotype-5 shuttlecraft. UponEnsignJiterica's assignment toStargazer in theyear2333,LieutenantChiang familiarized her with the roster of the vessel's complement of shuttles. Chiang's commentary indicated that the type-3 was not a new vehicle and that it couldn't handle sustained travel at warp speeds, so it was mostly held as a reserve to back up the newer, better equipped vehicles. - While the novel didn't reveal more details about the type-3 craft, theStar Trek Magazine plans for theStargazer showed severalSW7 class shuttles aboard the ship. Its possible that the type-3 is another designation for that vehicle. It is also possible that the comment about the shuttle's age was meant to give the impression that this looked similar to theTOS-eraS3 class shuttle, where "S3" and "type-3" might be considered synonymous.
A shuttle of this type, theManhattan was attached to theUSSHood in the2370s. TheManhattan was used byLieutenantTuvok to affect his "defection" to theMaquis in2371. The shuttle was destroyed by the Maquis vesselLiberator in order to avoid being tracked by theHood. (VOY -The Brave and the Bold, Book Twonovella:The Third Artifact)
