Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages ofStarfleet on theirmissions to discover newworlds and newlifeforms, and one Starfleetofficer who must learn that to truly understand all thingsalien, you must first understand yourself.

Summary[]

The announcement of the series in press release^{[citation needed]} announced only the initial format and did not describe any setting or subtitle for the show, which would be the first televisedStar Trek series to be released in over adecade. Subsequent press for the show had namedVOY andDS9 writer-producer Bryan Fuller as the showrunner,^{[citation needed]} Rod Roddenberry as a producer^[1] and director-writerNicholas Meyer as a member of the writing staff.^{[citation needed]}

The first trailer for the series was released inMay2016, with a new logo font for theStar Trek title and the tagline"New Crews. New Villains. New Heroes. New Worlds.".^[2]

InJuly 2016, a new trailer for the series debuted for Comic-Con, showing the new USSDiscovery (NCC-1031) and the title of the show, with showrunner Fuller teasing that the show would take place in an unspecified era of the originalStar Trek timeline.^[3]

InJanuary 2017, StarTrek.com confirmed that AmbassadorSarek would appear.^[4]

CBS later stated thatDiscovery was looking at a "sometime late summer, early fall" release date, before the show's premiere inSeptember2017.[1]

After the successful completion of the first season in2018, plans went underway for asecond season, slated to premiere in early2019. In the interim,Discovery's first spin-off was announced, a series of episodic vignettes entitledShort Treks.
