History[]

In2153,GeneralGeorge Casey, at the request ofStarfleetCaptainJonathan Archer, assigned a detachment of MACO troops, commanded byMajorJoss Hayes, to thestarshipEnterprise for its mission into theDelphic Expanse. (ENTepisode &novelization:The Expanse)

Since the Earth Starfleet was not a military organization, MACO troops were used to fulfill any military functions needed aboard Earth Starfleet vessels. MACO's fought in theUndine War in the25th century. (STOnovel:The Needs of the Many)

There were MACO posts in the city ofAtlanta and theJanus loop. One of their training posts was atWest Point inNew York. (ENTepisodes: "The Xindi", "Hatchery", "The Council") In2155, during theEarth-Romulan War, the Military Assault Command Operations were heavily involved in the ground scale engagements against theRomulans. They were known to have suffered losses atDeneva andBerengaria VII by sneak attacks from theRomulan Star Empire. Due to Starfleet's limited number of ships, there were fears on how to get MACO troopers to the front lines without adequate ship support. (ENT -The Romulan Warnovel:Beneath the Raptor's Wing)

Following the Romulan War and the founding of theUnited Federation of Planets, most of MACO was absorbed into theFederation Starfleet on19 November2161 asStarfleet Security, with the rest becoming theStarfleet Marine Corps. Some MACO officers joined Starfleet, such as MajorBalthazar M. Edison, who became captain of theUSSFranklin. During the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257, Earth was again supplying MACO forces to Starfleet, as were other world's remaining planetary defense forces.^[1] This was due to the efforts of Starfleet's Admiral Zog Ferran, who saw the need and created Emergency Initiative Alpha-Zero, to provide needed forces in a hurry, This training was not up to the standards of the height of the Pre-Federation MACO forces, nor was it intended to be the standing army of professional soldiery.^[2]
