Biography[]
Early life[]
Akaar was the hereditary leader, orteer, of theTen Tribes of Capella. Akaar was born in2267 and was named afterStarfleetofficersLeonard McCoy andJames T. Kirk, who saved his life and the life of his motherEleen after hisfather's assassination. (TOSepisode &novelization:Friday's Child)

The infant Leonard James Akaar in 2267
When Akaar was five, a coup onCapella IV staged by a man namedKeel forced the young ruler into exile in theUnited Federation of Planets. (DS9 -Mission Gammanovel:Twilight,ST -The Lost Eranovel:The Sundered)
In2287, Akaar testified at the so-called "trial" of James T. Kirk on Kirk's behalf when both theKlingon Empire and theSalla of theNasgul demanded Kirk's head for perceived offenses. (TOScomic: "The Trial of James T. Kirk")
Starfleet[]
He served on theUSSExcelsior, first as a junior security officer with the rank ofEnsign underLawrence Styles and later underHikaru Sulu, who was partially responsible for getting the hot-tempered youth admitted intoStarfleet Academy, aschief of security. He was onboard theExcelsior during a difficult assignment dealing with theTholian Assembly and theNeyel in2298. (STnovels:Excelsior: Forged in Fire,The Sundered)
By2308, Akaar had transferred from theExcelsior to become thesecond officer aboard theLarson-class starshipUSSKuala Lumpur. (TLEnovel:One Constant Star)
In the year2349, Akaar was given command of theUSSWyoming, where he had previously served asfirst officer, following the sudden death of the previouscaptain,Karl Broadnax. Soon after his promotion, Akaar andEnsignTuvok (with whom Akaar had served with on theExcelsior forty years prior) were stranded on a barren rock known asPlanetoid 437. After nearly two weeks, Akaar decided that the best way to preserve their supplies so that at least one of them would survive was to commit suicide through an ancient Capellan ritual called thew'lash'nogot. Tuvok refused to let his captain die, and saved his life. Akaar saw this disruption of the ancient ritual as a betrayal by his old friend, and the two did not speak as friends again until the year2380. (TTNnovel:The Red King)
Akaar's command of theWyoming included participation in theTzenkethi War. (ST -The Fallnovel:Revelation and Dust)
Admiral Akaar[]
By the year2364, Akaar had been promoted toAdmiral. Akaar was one of the Admirals who sentencedEnsignRo Laren to the stockade onJaros II following the disastrous incident onGaron II. (DS9novel:Lesser Evil)
25th century[]
- It would seem that, in theprime timeline, Akaar did continue in theadmiralty, although possibly not being involved in all the missions he took part in asC-in-C in theFirst Splinter timeline.
In2409, Admiral Akaar visited the planetAelas in an attempt to convince theAelasans to form diplomatic ties with the Federation rather than theKlingon Empire. The Aelasans were a primitive culture descended from an advanced, spacefaring race. When a Starfleet ship arrived to help, the Aelasans ruled that whichever species stops the "demon of the sky" - an asteroid on collision course with the planet - would be granted a trade agreement. The Starfleet ship stopped the asteroid, and shortly thereafter Akaar was taken back to a starbase aboard theUSSChekov. (STOmission: "Saturday's Child")
Alternate realities[]
WhenElias Vaughn underwenthis second orb experience, he took on the persona ofEli Underwood, a patient in the same insane asylum asBenny Russell. Another man in the asylum wasLeo, Akaar's representation in that reality, who, to account for Akaar's Capellan physiology, was perceived as a giant in the1950s human world. (DS9novel:Unity)
First Splinter timeline[]
In theyear2373, thetimeline became fractured, with one permutation being referred to as theFirst Splinter timeline.Admiral Akaar's career advanced in this version of reality, while in theprime timeline he followed a different path. Although Akaar continued as an admiral, in particular oneVictor Bordson had, by2381, taken the specific assignment asC-in-C that Akaar earned at that point in the First Splinter. (ST -Codanovel:Oblivion's Gate;PICnovel:The Last Best Hope)
By May of2376 , Akaar had been promoted toFleet Admiral. He spent some time aboardDeep Space 9 that year to observeBajor's handling ofEuropani refugees after theGateways Crisis, and as part of a diplomatic effort working out the final details of Bajor's admittance into the United Federation of Planets. Akaar was a signatory at Bajor's admittance ceremony onSeptember 29, 2376. (DS9novels:Twilight,This Gray Spirit,Cathedral,Lesser Evil,Unity)
In late2379, Akaar and AdmiralWilliam Ross assigned theUSSTitan, under the command of CaptainWilliam T. Riker, to lead a diplomatic and humanitarian convoy bound forRomulus, in response toPraetorTal'Aura's request for a dialogue to be opened between the Federation and theRomulan Star Empire following the coup which was staged by, and caused the death of,Reman PraetorShinzon. (TTNnovel:Taking Wing)
Akaar accompaniedTitan on her mission which resulted in a deal being brokered by Captain Riker andAmbassadorSpock between theKlingon Empire, the Remans and the Romulan Star Empire. "L.J." was onboard when the vessel was inadvertently transported to theSmall Magellanic Cloud. It was then that Akaar was reunited with Tuvok.
During the evacuation of theNeyel people from the expansion of theproto-galaxy known to theTitan's crew as the "Red King," Akaar finally realized that Tuvok's action all those years ago was not in defiance of Akaar, but out of respect for him. Akaar apologized to Tuvok for the way he had treated him and for all of the years of friendship lost between them. (TTNnovel:The Red King)
In2380, Admiral Akaar had been appointed asStarfleet liaison to theFederation President and, as such, briefedNanietta Bacco several times on various matters. Among the issues discussed with President Bacco was the state of the agreement brokered by Captain Riker and Spock, a shipload of Reman refugees who sought sanctuary in the Federation, and aTzenkethi noble who defied his government to get medical treatment for his son in the Federation. (STnovel:Articles of the Federation)
During theBorg Invasion of 2381, Akaar briefed the President several times on the status of the fleet's actions; after he reported the loss of three starbases on the tri-border between the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans, the President inquired what Starfleet was doing to prepare for the next attack. He reported that theUSSEnterprise was following a lead to theAzure Nebula, and reported that should theBorg overcome the defenses atRegulus, the core worlds would be completely vulnerable. (ST -Destinynovel:Gods of Night)
As the invasion pushed deeper into allied territory, Akaar continued making regular reports at thePalais de la Concorde, something that President Bacco began to dislike due to the usually negative news. After reporting attacks onYridia,Hyralan, andCeles, Akaar continued on to list the likely next targets -Regulus,Deneva, andQo'noS all within five hours, and major internal worlds by the next morning. Akaar estimated that within ten days, the entire Federation would collapse, and all major powers in the local space would be defeated within a month.Esperanza Piñiero insisted they evacuate those worlds, but Akaar pointed out they no longer had the resources to move tens of billions of people in a matter of hours. President Bacco asked for an estimate of the total number of deaths up until this point, and Akaar stated that including non-Federation worlds, the losses were close to thirty billion. The sole point of good news was that contact had been reestablished with theEnterprise andAventine; Akaar agreed to pass along a message that CaptainJean-Luc Picard was granted the authority to do whatever it took to stop the Borg by the office of the President. Hours later, when the Borg were closing in on Qo'noS, AdmiralEdward Jellico diverted theUSSTempest and its battle group to support, but Akaar could not guarantee they would arrive in time to make a difference.
It was not long afterwards that Admirals Akaar andMarta Batanides reported that the Borg had adapted to thetransphasic torpedo, leaving Starfleet without a defense against the invading forces. Scant hours afterward, Akaar and Batanides reported the surprising development that the Borg had ceased their assaults momentarily, allowing the fleets atVulcan,Andor,Coridan III,Beta Rigel and Qo'noS to be defeated, only to shortly reverse the news to indicate that all remaining attack fleets had resumed their previous courses, including the group heading for Earth. They later made their midnight briefing to the President, where she commented that Akaar always managed to look well rested and crisp; Akaar suggested it was good genes. Akaar reported the Romulan warbirdIRWVerithrax loyal toImperial Romulan StateEmpressDonatra sacrificed itself to halt the attack atArdana; Bacco suggested they send an immediate expression of gratitude. Akaar also repeated rumors of a credible but not entirely corroborated report thatTroyius was spared by theStarfleet Corps of Engineers vesselUSS da Vinci which made it disappear. The Borg were an hour and a half from Earth at this point; Akaar stated that there was no way Starfleet could halt their advance, and so Bacco had him order them to break off and disperse to not waste the lives and ships, redeploying to protect evacuation vessels.
Akaar returned to brief Bacco in theMonet Room as the Borg entered theSol system, reporting as they passedJupiter. Even as their enemy approached, President Bacco spent time considering the painting hanging in the room -Bridge over a Pool of Water Lilies.Seven of Nine thought it obvious - the muted palette and soft details helping as a point of focus when attempting to concentrate. Akaar, however, having served underMin Zife knew exactly why it was there - Zife had loved the painting and wanted it displayed in this room as a reminder to himself and others that at stake was art, history, beauty, and their legacy if they should ever fail; their job might be to decide how to fight their enemies, but the painting served as a reminder so that no one would forget why they fought. The attacking Borg fleet split into two smaller groups - one for Earth and one forMars. However, before the assault could begin, all Borg vessels they were tracking halted, and then reversed course back to theAzure Nebula. Akaar and the others remained to watch the situation monitors, and received word from the nebula that the Borg had been neutralized. Captain Picard later confirmed the all clear signal, something that he relayed through Akaar would be fully explained in his report, assuring it was a long story. (ST -Destinynovel:Lost Souls)
After Fleet AdmiralEdward Jellico's resignation following the Borg Invasion, Fleet Admiral Akaar was appointedCommanding Officer, Starfleet Command. He attempted to promote Picard to Admiral in recognition of Picard's unorthodox position in Starfleet's command structure-able to defy orders and still receive the best possible outcome-but Picard refused the offer, citing the adviceJames T. Kirk gave him during their brief meeting in theNexus. This prompted Akaar to conclude that Starfleet needed another captain who was like Kirk more than it needed another admiral, at that time. (TNGnovel:Losing the Peace)
In 2381, several days after the end of the Borg invasion,Benjamin Sisko met with Akaar and requested that he return to active service. Akaar thought about promoting Sisko to Admiral, but Sisko requested the command of a starship. Several months later, Akaar and President Bacco sent Sisko to meetDonatra onAchernar Prime. (ST -Typhon Pactnovel:Rough Beasts of Empire)
OnApril 5,2382, Admiral Akaar attended the annualFirst Contact Day reception held at the Palais de la Concorde. Right before the reception started, he and President Bacco were approached byJulia Paris and her son, theUSSVoyager's first officer,Lieutenant commanderTom Paris who informed both of them of the true nature of theCatomic Plague and the roles ofCommanderJefferson Briggs andSeven of Nine in the crisis. After listening to an unwitting confession made by Briggs, Akaar ordered a team ofsecurity officers to take him into custody.
Later, Akaar relieved AdmiralKenneth Montgomery from command ofProject Full Circle due to his willful blindness during the catomic health crisis, and took over as operational commander of the Full Circle fleet. He also promotedIcheb to the rank of Ensign and assigned him to the Full Circle fleet, telling the young man that he would be the type of officer that would either get drummed out of the service or rise up through the ranks, ala Jim Kirk. (VOYnovel:Atonement)
In2385, Akaar was one of the first people to be told about the death of President Bacco at the hands of an assassin. Captain Sisko had informed him via a priority one transmission from theUSSRobinson. Upon hearing the news, Akaar became deeply distressed, even at one point standing up from the console and letting himself collapse into a nearby chair. Akaar now found himself mourning the loss of a mother figure, despite the fact he had been older than Bacco. Upon the termination of the transmission, Akaar immediately contacted theFederation Council. (ST -The Fallnovel:Revelation and Dust)
During the same year, in the days leading up the assassination, Akaar was in constant contact with Jean-Luc Picard regarding the crisis onCardassia. He was also the one who informed Picard of the death of President Bacco. For the remainder of the mission, Akaar would receive reports from Picard about new happenings and would also relay new orders to Picard directly from thePresident Pro-Tempore. Upon averting the crisis on Cardassia, Akaar then ordered Picard toFerenginar according to orders given out by the President. Before signing off, Akaar also shared in Picard's confusions about theEnterprise being dispatched to Ferenginar. (ST -The Fallnovel:The Crimson Shadow)
During the crisis on Andoria, Akaar noted the President Pro Tem continuously bypassed the chain of command and gave people orders faster than Akaar was able to do so himself and brought it the attention of the President. He talked of specific examples, but Anjar didn't seem fazed.
At some point prior to 2385 Akaar married. Aside from the Federation President one of the few people who had the privilege of shouting at the Admiral was his wife. (ST -The Fallnovel:A Ceremony of Losses)
In lateSeptember of 2385, Akaar orderedTitan back to Earth to employ the help of William Riker in finding out about apparent corruption in theOffice of the Federation President. Upon the return ofTitan, Riker was almost immediately promoted toRear Admiral and given leeway to investigate. At the end of Riker's investigation and as a direct of it,Galif jav Velk had been arrested after his hand was forced and Akaar received the complete story of who really killed Nanietta Bacco. With Velk taken down, there was still the problem of removing PresidentIshan Anjar from office, as it was believed that the President was fully aware of Velk's actions. Akaar had stated to Riker his hands were tied, as nothing actually linked Ishan to Zelk's black operations. (ST -The Fallnovel:The Poisoned Chalice)
After theEnterprise found proof that Ishan had been dead for many years, that the man calling himself "Ishan" was actually a Bajoran collaborator namedBaras Rodirya who arranged the assassination of President Bacco, Baras was arrested and removed from office. Akaar ordered the charges dropped for everyone who helpedJulian Bashir resolve the Andorian genetic crisis, but Bashir himself was still held accountable for his actions. Akaar also issued orders for Picard to begin a long term mission of exploration. (ST -The Fallnovel:Peaceable Kingdoms)
In theyear2387, Fleet Admiral Akaar confrontedAdmiralWilliam Riker oversubspace radio regarding disobedience of orders, attempting to relieve Riker of duty. The conversation was interrupted when the entireSolsystem was destroyed as part of theDevidians'temporal apocalypse, killing Akaar and every other member ofStarfleet Command and theFederation government onEarth. (ST -Codanovel:Oblivion's Gate)

Background[]
On the covers of novels, Akaar is depicted with the likeness of the actor who played his father inTOS,Ben GageMA.
In Capellan names and words, a double vowel often denotes a division between syllables. For example, "Teer" has two syllables and is pronounced as "TEE-ur", not one syllable like the English words "tear" or "tier". The admiral's family name is, therefore, properly pronounced as "AKKA-are".
