Judge Advocate General

TheJudge Advocate General Corps (orJAG, also known asStarfleet Justice Division) was a division of theUnited Federation of PlanetsStarfleet responsible for legal matters concerning Starfleet personnel, includingcourts martial. They were also responsible for assigning legal representatives to officers during a tribunal held over actions of personnel convicted of crimes.

In the24th century, one Starfleet regulation held that JAG officers were forbidden from piloting themselves via shuttlecraft. (TNGcomic: "The Rich and the Dead!")

Rana Desai was the senior JAG officer assigned toStarbase 47 in2265, responsible for matters within theTaurus Reach. Under her supervision were several Starfleet lawyers, includingLieutenantHolly Moyer andCommanderPeter Liverakos. (VANnovel:Harbinger)

Phillipa Louvois was the JAG officer who presided over the investigation into the loss of theUSSStargazer in2353, and ruled on the legal standing ofLieutenant CommanderData in2365. (TNGepisode: "The Measure of a Man")

Rear AdmiralBennett was the head of the Judge Advocate General's Office in2373, and acceptedRichard Bashir's guilty plea following the revelation that he had his sonJulian illegally subjected to genetic enhancement. (DS9episode: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume")
