AnIsomorphic compound is used by Species 8472 to appear human. Willem Batiste used it to infiltrate Starfleet Command, and rose to the rank Admiral. Other agents used it too. Species 8472 provided the agents with enough of the compound to last a few years. The agents were ordered to terminate themselves after the compound ran out. It is unknown how Willem Batiste had enough to last very long. (VOYnovel:Unworthy)
