Wilhelmsem served as communications officer aboardHikaru Sulu's first command, theUSSRobert A. Heinlein, which went missing in2275. He and other personnel were rescued by theUSSEnterprise. (TOSvideo game:The Kobayashi Alternative)
In2285, Wilhelmsem was a relief communications officer forNyota Uhura aboard theExcelsior. At one point, Uhura chastised him for accidentally deactivating the ship-wideuniversal translator.
A week later, eightAjir commandeered the ship and placed the seniorbridge crewofficers in thebrig. Wilhelmsem manned communications for actingCODahai Iohor Naraht. Interpreting Kirk's orders to slow down the Ajir without harming them, Naraht asked Wilhelmsem to turn off the translators again. When the intruders arrived on thebridge, they couldn't understand any of the crew. Wilhelmsem went a step further and shorted out themultistate equivocator, creating dramatic sparks across the bridge consoles.
