First City

The First City in2368.

TheFirst City (Klingonese:veng wa'DIch) was a municipality onQo'noS near theQam-Chee River, and thecapital city of theKlingon Empire.
History[]
The First City was founded thousands of years ago, before the time ofKahless the Unforgettable, as a fortress on a highly defensible mountain range, with theGreat Hall as its only structure. (DS9 -The Left Hand of Destinynovel:[citation needed]) Once Kahless united theKlingons, it became the planet's seat of power, though it was not until the reign ofEmperorSompek that it became a true city. (KEnovel:A Burning House)
Onstardate 5892.7, the First City was invaded by theDecepticons, being subjected to an orbital bombardment byTrypticon. Salvation arrived in the form of theAutobots and the crew of theUSSEnterprise who delayed the invaders long enough forKuri to summon a fleet ofD7s that defeated the Decepticons. In the aftermath,Gorkon allowed the Autobots and humans to go in peace on the condition that the Decepticons were left in Klingon custody. (TAS -Star Trek vs. Transformerscomic: "Issue 5")
The architecture of the First City was originally dictated by the need for defense against aerial attack, leading to pyramidal designs and high spires. Other styles were used in following centuries; however, in the aftermath of the destruction ofPraxis,ChancellorAzetbur decreed that all rebuilding in the First city should follow the design of the Great Hall and other structures of Sompek's era. (KEnovel:A Burning House)
The city has come under attack several times over the years. In2368, it was attacked by forces loyal to theHouse of Duras during theKlingon Civil War. (TNGepisodes: "Sins of the Father", "Redemption, Part I") In2376, it came under attack from forces loyal toMorjod, son of Martok during his attemptedcoup. (DS9 -The Left Hand of Destinynovel:Book One)
In2378, the First City was the epicenter ofthe Day of Blood.Kahless II and hisRed Path cult had incited riots, murders ofgovernment officials, masssuicide, arson, and property destruction in this and other cities. (ST -Day of Bloodcomic: "Part 1")
There were rumours which theorised that certain areas inside the First City owed their allegiances to a mysterious order known as theLeghbe'lu'wI', which had been linked to events inside the Empire since before the High Council was brought together in a war with the Federation that occurred more than half-a-century before. Most warriors dismissed the idea that sections of their capital was under the control of the Unseen, which was thought to be nothing more than a myth. Alternate timelines[]
First Splinter timeline[]
Much of the First City - including the Great Hall - was destroyed by theBorg during their2381attack on Qo'noS. The destruction of the Great Hall led Martok to claim he was the only chancellor to have the Great Hall destroyed twice. (ST -Destinynovel:Lost Souls)
Kelvin timeline[]
In2261 of theKelvin timeline,Section 31 entered into an alliance with theRomulan Star Empire to destroy the Klingons. With a new generation of Romulan warbirds totalling the Klingon defence fleet and providing a chaotic cover, Section 31 marines captured the First City, holding theKlingon High Council hostage as they prepared to detonate the last sample of red matter in theGreat Hall beforeJames T. Kirk convinced them that the threat of the red matter was a more valuable weapon. Content with the damage they'd done to the Empire, Section 31 retreated. (TOS -The Khitomer Conflictcomics: "Part 3", "Part 4")
Foreigners[]
The First City has outworlders living in the city, both within and without the city's boundaries. In the city are a large population of non-Klingon permanent residents, both the descendants of subjugated species and beings from allied worlds. There is also a large community of merchants from various worlds and races, especiallyTellarites. Due to ongoing disputes withCardassia, there aren't manyCardassians in the First City, and it's rare to find anyRomulans if at all. Foreigners aren't allowed to build homes or businesses in the architectural style of their home worlds, thereby preserving the city's historical and traditional aesthetic.
