English is alanguage originating with and used byEarthHumans.

The English language descended fromAnglo-Saxon,Latin, and severalCeltic languages in the country ofEngland. England had a period of colonialism beginning in the16th century and lasting through the20th century. This period spread the English language throughout the world and become a primary language in science, trade, and international politics. (TNGnovel:The Captains' Honor)

In use for thousands of years, this language has gone through many changes leading up to the era of theFederation, where22nd and23rd century English (also calledAnglish) was used as a major influence in the creation ofthe Federation's Standard Galacta language. (TOSepisode: "Metamorphosis")

Gene Roddenberry mentioned in1988's "The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation to the Next" thatCaptain Horatio Hornblower (the basis forJames T. Kirk) was the most popular, fictional protagonist in the English language-according to Ernest Hemingway.
