History and specifications[]

Unlike any other Federation shuttlecraft before it, theDelta Flyer was a blend ofStarfleet andBorg technology, and was designed to perform in situations that were deemed too hazardous for standard shuttlecraft. Among the many features included on theDelta Flyer were an ultra-aerodynamictetraburnium alloy hull, retractablewarp nacelles,parametallic hull plating,unimatrix shielding, and aBorg-inspired weapons systems, includingpulse phasers andphotonic missiles.

For several yearsTom Paris had been working on plans to design and build a new shuttlecraft, but the plans were finally given the go-ahead byCaptainKathryn Janeway, whenVoyager had to recover itsmulti-spatial probe from agas giant, before theMalon could obtain it. Following a brainstorming session with Paris,Tuvok,Seven of Nine,Harry Kim, andB'Elanna Torres, the design of theDelta Flyer was finalized, and construction of the ship rushed. TheDelta Flyer's mission was successful, despite ahull breach, and the probe was safely returned toVoyager. (VOYepisode: "Extreme Risk")

A few months later theFlyer was equipped with atranswarp coil, when Captain Janeway led a team to rescue Seven of Nine from theBorg Queen at the heart of theCollective. Once Seven was rescued, theFlyer returned toVoyager at transwarp speed with the Queen close behind. Fortunately, theFlyer's defenses were able to hold until they reachedVoyager. WhenVoyager was trapped in theVohrsoth Forge, theDelta Flyer was used to transport members of thehazard team onto theScavengers' base of operations in order to acquire stolen samples ofisodesium. This transport was done by shuttlecraft because the Scavengers had atransporterinhibitor present which prevented a direct beam-in into the station. (VOYvideo game:Elite Force)

In late2376, Captain Janeway, Tuvok, and Torres, took theFlyer into the path of aBorg tactical cube, with the ultimate goal of infiltrating the Collective and be able to assist the inhabitants ofUnimatrix Zero. When theFlyer approached the Cube, the Queen had the shuttlecraft destroyed, and the away team beamed onto the cube just as theFlyer was destroyed. (VOYepisode: "Unimatrix Zero, Part I")

Following the team's return toVoyager in early2377, a replacement, theDelta Flyer II, was constructed. (VOYepisode: "Drive")

By2381 theDelta Flyer andDelta Flyer II design had inspiredStarfleet's newheavy shuttlecraft design, theFlyer-class. (TTNnovel:Over a Torrent Sea)
