Born asWilliam MacLeod Newman in Chicago, Illinois, he moved to Seattle, Washington in 1937 and attended Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington where he graduated in 1956. Between 1958 and 1960 he attended the Columbia University through the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for advanced writing study. Throughout the 1950s and 1960 he served in the Armed Forces and became a teacher for English.
Since 1965, Newman appeared on stages in plays including "The Trial of Catonsville Nine", "Beggar's Opera", "Over Here", and "Strangers". In the 1970s he also started to work for television and film productions, most notable supporting roles inThe Postman Always Rings Twice (1981, withJohn Colicos andChristopher Lloyd),The Mosquito Coast (1986, withJason Alexander),Funny Farm (1988, withKevin Conway,Mike Starr,Dan Desmond,Reg E. Newmanpassed away on 27 May 2015 at Hayes Manor Senior Residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after a prolonged struggle against the vascular affliction, Multi-Infarct Dementia.[1]
