Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 was released onVHS in theUK byCIC Video in two different formats: a two-episode-per-tape release in1990-1991, and a three-episode-per-tape release in1998. The original release was deleted on1 January1998.

Releases[]

Dates in italics are approximations based on release frequency, where no exact date is available. UK products are normally released on a Monday.

Rental releases[]

New Stars. New Stories. New Worlds to Explore.

A rental release also took place starting from early1988. While it generally followed the original broadcast order there were a few differences. Two episodes of the season, "Too Short A Season" and "Home Soil" for unknown reasons were not released in this run. At least the first two volumes were also released onBetamax. For the initial rental releases, the two episodes on each tape were re-edited to somewhat flow together. The credits for guest stars, writers, etc, for both episodes would all be shown during the first episode after the title sequence with the main cast credits. The first episode would then have no ending credits and would simply fade to black at the end. The next episode would then begin, it would have no title sequence or on-screen guest credits but it would show the episode title on-screen as normal, then at the end it would have credits covering the cast and crew for both episodes. It is unclear why they went to the trouble of editing the episodes like this.

A four-episode-per-tape release also took place in the early 1990s, albeit exclusive toBlockbuster Video (UK) only. This release did not take account of season divisions, and so the volume containing the last episodes of a season would sometimes also include the first episodes of the next.

From 1988 onward (starting with theNext Generation rentals), the UK CIC Video releases had served as the template for allStar Trek tape releases in the rest of Europe, Australasia (it being aPAL territory as well), and Japan (despite being a NTSC territory), with local branches of CIC Video responsible for eithersubtitling or dubbing in the language of the target market, as well as optionally adapting sleeve cover art to local tastes. The later Netherlands/Flanders video case sleeve cover art for example, was virtually indistinguishable from their UK counterparts, save for the ratings and text imprint language of the episode summaries/disclaimers on the back cover art.

CIC Video had entered into a joint venture with Swedish distributorEsselte Video in the earlyNext Generation rental days for several northern European countries, which included the Netherlands and the Nordics. And while the earliest released rentals were based off CIC's sleeve design, they did sport a somewhat revised redesign. This was especially evident on the covers of the Norwegian and Swedish[1] Volume 4 rentals which featured a photo-shopped image of theUSSEnterprise-D battling theUSSReliant fromStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan aside from sporting the hyperbolic "Starfight" title. The early Dutch Volume 1 Esselte variant rental also sported a likewise withspace stationRegula I edited sleeve cover, but the cover sleeves of later Dutch rental/retail releases at least became (translated) clones of their UK counterparts.

Along with their 1990-91 counterpart retail issues, CIC Video also re-released VHS tapes for the Blockbuster Video UK rental circuit. These rental reissues differed in this respect from the retail releases by containing four episodes instead of two as what they called "Rental Exclusives". Obviously not intended for retail sale, some copies did turn up in the second hand market after all, among others through the UK Blockbuster Video rental chain itself[1], after the VHS/DVD rental circuit ceased to exist a couple of years later.

Re-release[]

Make It So

A format unheard of in the US, where the one-episode per tape was the VHS release standard for "Trekkies", the European three/four-episode per tape retail release was initiated after the favorable reception of the similarly executed 1996-98Original Series multi-episode per tape reissue. As a clear-cut case of "market discrimination", Americans had to wait for the advent of the 2002DVD season box sets to make matters right for them.

Footnotes[]

  1. Rental copies had the distinct advantage over their retail counterparts in that they were much sturdier; confronted with intensive use, the rental copies were manufactured with much thicker tapes than the retail copies were, which improved their longevity substantially.
  2. 2.02.12.22.3This episode was given the British-spelled title of "Code of Honour" on the video sleeve.
  3. As indicated on inside sleeve
  4. Also includes "The Child" and "Where Silence Has Lease" fromSeason 2.
  5. This cover image features rehearsal footage from "Lonely Among Us" and showsLeVar Burton minus hisVISOR.
  6. 6.06.1This volume was released on a Tuesday, as opposed to the usual Monday, due to the UK May Day Bank Holiday.
  7. Natasha Yar's face is obscured by shadow on the video sleeve, reflecting her death in the previous volume.
  8. 8.08.1Four episode tape. (This was usually done to keep the number of episodes per tape above three towards the end of a season.)
  9. In Italy, it were seasons 2 through 7 that adhered to the new CIC Video UK cover design/artwork, whereas its first season featured the cover design that had been based off the 1996-97US Season 5 single-episode/tape release run. The latter incidentally, also explains the incongruous inclusion ofGuinan on the Italian first season VHS front covers and the absence of Natasha Yar andWesley Crusher.
  10. In the case of sets, the certificate is over the set as a whole (unless stated otherwise).
