Nitrogen is the seventhelement in theperiodic table. Nitrogen naturally occurs as acolorless andodorlessgas, generally considered to be inert. As aliquid, it is also colorless and odorless, and is similar in appearance towater.
Nitrogen makes up 78% ofEarth'satmosphere by volume. The compounds made of nitrogen, combined with other elements, are so active as to be most important infoods, poisons, fertilizers, andexplosives.
