Lilyan Chauvin (6 August192526 June2008; age 82) was theEmmy Award-nominated French actress, writer, and director who playedVedekYassim in theStar Trek: Deep Space Ninesixth season episode "Rocks and Shoals".

Biography[]

Chauvin was a native of Paris, France, where she began her career in show business working in broadcast radio. She was initially desired to become a lawyer, but soon shifted to acting. She moved to New York on her 21st birthday in 1946 and became a US citizen. She began appearing in New York television productions and ultimately moved to Los Angeles, California, to continue her career. Her acting career spans nearly six decades, with over one hundred and twenty film and television appearances.

In addition to acting, Chauvin was also a writer and director. She directed several stage productions in Los Angeles, including "Last Summer at Bluefish Cove", "The Happy Time", and "Laughter and Love". In total, she has 34 directing credits as a member of the Directors Guild of America. She was also an acting and directing coach and was the creator, show-runner, and host of the instructional seriesHollywood Structured. Additionally, she was a member ofWomen in Film for thirty-nine years, which included two stints as the organization's vice president.

Chauvindied at her home in Studio City, Los Angeles, California, following a 40-year battle with breast cancer. Congestive heart failure also contributed to her death.[1]

Film work[]

Chauvin's early films includeSilk Stockings (1957),Les Girls (1957),Elvis Presley'sKing Creole,The Wreck of the Mary Deare (1957), andNorth to Alaska (1960). She was uncredited in all of these films; the latter co-starredStanley Adams. Her first credited film role came inLost, Lonely and Vicious (1958). She later appeared in such films asYours, Mine and Ours (1968),The Mephisto Waltz (1971, starringWilliam Windom), andFunny Lady (1975, starringBen Vereen).

Perhaps Chauvin's best-remembered film work is her performance as Mother Superior inSilent Night, Deadly Night (1984, also starringCharles Dierkop). She is also noted for her roles in such films asPrivate Benjamin (1980, withRichard Herd,Alan Oppenheimer, andKeone Young),Predator 2 (1990, featuringKevin Peter Hall),Universal Soldier (1992, withTommy "Tiny" Lister, Jr.,Ed O'Ross, andLeon Rippy),Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1994, starringAndrew Robinson),The Man Who Wasn't There (2001, withChristopher McDonald andRick Scarry), andCatch Me If You Can (2002, starringTom Hanks, withRobert Curtis Brown,Thomas Kopache,J. Patrick McCormack,Ray Proscia, andJimmie F. Skaggs).

Her additional film credits includeListen to Me (1989, withAnthony Zerbe),Bad Influence (1990, withJohn de Lancie),True Identity (1991, starringFrank Langella andMichael McKean), andNo Place to Hide (1993, withDey Young).

Television work[]

Chauvin guest-starred on numerous television series in the course of her career. In 1965, she co-starred withGlenn Corbett andIrene Tsu in an episode ofThe Man from U.N.C.L.E. Two years later, she was cast by veteranStar Trek: The Original Series directorMarc Daniels in an episode ofMission: Impossible with fellowDeep Space Nine guest starFritz Weaver. She later worked with Weaver again onMarathon Man (1976), which also starredMarc Lawrence.

Chauvin received an Emmy Award nomination for her guest appearance on a 1977 episode ofNBC'sBaa Baa Black Sheep, which starredJohn Larroquette. In 1979, Chauvin appeared onRicardo Montalban'sFantasy Island, in an episode withEllen Geer, and in 1982, she worked withRoger C. Carmel in an episode ofDiff'rent Strokes.

In 1983 and 1984, Chauvin played the recurring role of Sister Jeannette onFalcon Crest, working alongsideRobert Foxworth and, in one episode,Harry Basch andTed Sorel.Kate Vernon also appeared in one of Chauvin's episodes. She was later nominated by the Daytime Emmy Awards once again for her performance in a 1990 episode ofCBS'The Young and the Restless.

In addition toDeep Space Nine, other genre series on which Chauvin appeared includeEarth 2 (starringClancy Brown) andThe X-Files (1995, directed byMike Vejar and starringGillian Anderson, withKay E. Kuter), andJ.J. Abrams'Alias (starringMerrin Dungey, withCastulo Guerra). Among the many other television shows on which Chauvin guest-starred areAdventures of Superman,Maverick,Perry Mason,Daniel Boone (withGeorge D. Wallace),Mannix (withPaul Carr),The Bob Newhart Show (withRon Glass),Magnum, P.I.,The Facts of Life,Baywatch (directed byMonte Markham), andMurder, She Wrote (withTheodore Bikel,Richard Lynch, andAlbie Selznick).

Later appearances include episodes ofFriends,Frasier (starringKelsey Grammer),ER, andCSI: Crime Scene Investigation (starringPaul Guilfoyle andWallace Langham, withMatt Malloy andBecky Wahlstrom). She made her last television appearance in a 2007 episode ofUgly Betty, starringAlan Dale,Tony Plana, andVanessa Williams.
