History[]

A survivor of the devastation ofEarth'sthird World War, Sloane was somewhat used to seeingmurder and people getting "a thrill from murdering someone... all the time" in the society that was left in the 2060s. From her perspective,money was still very much the driving force in people's lives.

Though she was familiar with the story ofCaptainAhab andMoby Dick, she had never read thebook.

In working with Zefram Cochrane (whom she nicknamed "Zee") to develop Earth's first warp-capable ship, it took hersix months to gather enoughtitanium for just the fourmeter cockpit.

First Contact[]

OnApril 4,2063, themissile silo where Sloane and Cochrane were constructing their warp ship came under fire by aBorgvessel from the24th century. Despite the unwillingness of her partner, Sloane sought to protect thePhoenix from what she believed to be an attack from theEastern Coalition.

In the aftermath, Sloane remained in the missile silo where she encounteredStarfleet CaptainJean-Luc Picard andLieutenant CommanderData, there to repair the timeline. Armed with aCalico M960submachine gun, Sloane opened fire on the twoofficers, believing them to be members of the Eastern Coalition. Sloane was, however, felled bytheta radiation leaking from the damagedPhoenix and transported aboard theorbitingUSSEnterprise-E byDoctorBeverly Crusher.

Once aboard, Sloane was treated for severeradiation poisoning, but was revived by the medical staff when the Borg overran theEnterprisesickbay. Retreating to aJefferies tube, Sloane slipped away from Doctor Crusher and her team, eventually coming across Picard. She held the captain hostage until he was able to convince her that she was not in Montana anymore. Relinquishing thephaser to Picard, Sloane accompanied the captain in his effort to retake the ship.

Escaping from a group ofBorg drones, Picard and Sloane entered the ship'sholodeck. Dressed insatin, Sloane danced with Picard asDixon Hill, attempting to blend into theholographic scenery.

Finally returning to the bridge of theEnterprise, Sloane was present for a heated exchange between Picard and one of his officers, Lieutenant CommanderWorf. Following the captain into the adjacentobservation lounge, Sloane chastised Picard for his actions, comparing him to CaptainAhab ofHerman Melville'sMoby Dick, despite the fact that she had never read it. Sparring verbally with the captain, Sloane was able to convince Picard to relent and follow Worf's recommendation to engage the ship'sauto-destruct system.

Sloane departed theEnterprise along with the remainder of its crew in anescape pod bound forGravett Island. Captain Picard refused to join the officers who were leaving the ship. When she questioned him, the captain admitted that he was going back to find Data. The Captain had told her that Data had helped save him from the Borg years before. The captain, in turn, felt that he needed to save Data. Sloane was moved by this and told the captain to "go on and find your friend". She later reunited with Picard and his command crew, as well as Zefram Cochrane, back in Montana on the night of April 5, 2063. Sloane was outspoken and a little high-strung, yet she was also a capable judge of character; being the first to recognize Captain Picard's emotional demons.

Alternate realities and timelines[]

In an alternate reality, Lily Sloane was the main driving force in building aquantum reality drive instead of thewarp drive, with her reality'sZefram Cochrane serving as her assistant. She was eventually rankedCaptain within her reality's Federation and commanded theUSSBeagle to explore the various quantum realities to further their scientific knowledge. Inadvertently, the crew's inability to account for the dissipation of energy causedquantum fissures open up all over the multiverse, including in the prime universe, which weakened the fabric of the multiverse.

In2382, the creation of these fissures caused theAnaximander – aSection 31Defiant-classstarship from the prime universe but crewed by "interdimensionalcastaways" – to track down theBeagle, shooting it down onKhwopa. Having been completely unaware of the effect that she was having on the multiverse, Lily agreed to help the crew return to their home universes, but her ship was hijacked by a deranged variant ofHarry Kim who intended to return to his own universe with his kidnapped counterparts. Chased down by theAnaximander and facing resistance from his counterparts, Kim beamed his other selves to the Section 31 ship and refused to listen to warnings that theBeagle couldn't survive the trip in its damaged state. TheBeagle was destroyed, disrupting the coherence of the rift and threatening to unleashsoliton waves on the multiverse. Lily was able to figure out a way to direct the wave to just one universe using theAnaximander'snavigational deflector and CaptainWilliam Boimler ordered her to send it to the prime universe, trusting histransporter duplicateBrad Boimler and his friends on theUSSCerritos to find a solution in time. After theCerritos successfully stabilized the rift, theAnaximander returned to the prime universe with its interdimensional crew, including Lily and theBeagle crew. (LD: "The New Next Generation")

Lily Sloane was played byAlfre Woodard.

Her surname comes from the script. In the first draft of the script, she was named Ruby Sloane, a photographer and X-ray technician who was instrumental in helping Jean-Luc Picard repair the damagedPhoenix. The name Ruby was instead used for one of theDixon Hill characters seen in the film.

As the prime Sloane was already an adult Human in 2063, it is unclear if the alternate Sloane in 2382 is extraordinarily long-lived, or if theBeagle can travel across time as well as realities.

Apocrypha[]

The short story "A Girl for Every Star" inStrange New Worlds V established that a statue of Lily Sloane was created and placed outside the Sol Museum of Aeronautical Science.

In the novelCaptain's Peril, Sloane was considered a legend in space exploration, alongside Zefram Cochrane andShaun Geoffrey Christopher.

In the novelSpectre, Sloane's descendants settled on Alpha Centauri IV, where the family name became a space exploration dynasty. Notable Sloanes included Zefram Sloane.

Sloane appeared via flashback in thesecond issue of the comic crossover mini-seriesStar Trek vs. Transformers in which she and Zefram Cochrane are shown witnessing the Autobots leaving Earth aboard the Titan Fortress Maximus during the beginning of World War III.
